Heatgate???

So what good is an Apple product release without a little controversy?

We’ve had Antennagate and Batterygate with some of the iPhone launches. Even a little Locationgate and AddressBookgate along the way. With numerous anecdotal reports of hot iPads (and I don’t mean stolen), is it time for Heatgate?

Probably not. With more than 3 million iPads sold since its launch on March 16th, there doesn’t seem to be widespread reports of hot iPads.

Consumer Reports has conducted some testing and found that the new iPad can run considerably hotter than the iPad 2 when running an action game. In their tests, they found the new iPad to be about 12 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than the iPad 2.

What does Apple have to say about this? According to The Verge, Apple spokesperson Trudy Muller said “the new iPad delivers a stunning Retina display, A5X chip, support for 4G LTE plus 10 hours of battery life, all while operating well within our thermal specifications. If customers have any concerns they should contact AppleCare.”

So, Heatgate? Probably not yet. At this point, this issue doesn’t seem to be of the magnitude of the other ‘gates’.

  1. It’s nothing compared to my android phone which periodically doubles as a hand warmer.
