In 1959, U.S.S.R. probe Luna 3 transmitted the first photographs ever taken of the far side of the Moon.
The Luna 3’s camera was fixed in the spacecraft. Pointing was achieved by rotating the probe, the camera cover opened and photography automatically started once a photocell detected the Moon.
