Free Locally Installed Dictionary/Thesaurus

WordWeb is an excellent free locally installed dictionary/thesaurus that instantly provides users with word definitions and synonyms:

  • One-click lookup in almost any Windows program
  • Hundreds of thousands of definitions and synonyms
  • The latest international English words
  • Works offline, or reference to Wikipedia and web references

WordWeb works with just about anything that contains text including both local and online. Simply right-click any word while holding down the Ctrl key and WordWeb pops up with all the relevant information. Alternatively, you can highlight a word and then click the WordWeb icon in the system tray.

WordWeb includes a full dictionary and thesaurus for American, British, Canadian, Australian, Indian, and global English, and also includes an “audio” feature whereby users can hear the word pronounced — either click the speaker icon across the top of the interface or use the keyboard combination Ctrl + S

WordWeb Portable

If you’d prefer to run WordWeb as a portable program, that can be achieved via options available when running the installer. Download the installer edition and run as per normal:

In the first window click, Accept and files will then be extracted. In the following window click the Advanced options button:

In the next window enable the option to Install as portable and click OK:

Use the Browse button under “Folder” to select your preferred location and then click Next.

NOTE: The option to auto-start WordWeb with Windows is not available (greyed out) in the portable version. To overcome this, create a shortcut to the executable in the following folder:

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
(replace <user> with your username)

BOTTON LINE:

WordWeb is among the first applications I always install on any new system, so useful to instantly check word meanings and correct word usage. An absolute time saver — highly recommended.

  1. Hi Jim,
Thanks for the WordWeb information and link, now installed on Desktop PC, Mrs’ Laptop and two ‘phones, much quicker than the ‘look-up’.
Since UK grammar school I have been a bit of a fanatic regarding the correct use of the English Language, and in our current society the general misuse which I encounter can be somewhat aggravating after being taught the iron fist in velvet glove teaching in the past.

    Regards,
    Jonno 😉

  2. Totally agree Jim. You covered every aspect of WordWeb in your usual eloquent manner. I have and continue to use it since version 5 or 6. As always, if I find a program I enjoy and use it often enough, I upgrade to the Pro version. My way of supporting new versions.
