I just ordered the xp sp3 cd from ms. I have dial-up and of course it would take forever to download that.
The information panel from the ms site says it includes all previous updates.
Does that mean than when I get that xp sp3 cd, it will also contain xp sp 2 and sp1?
I have mce 2005 version - does that matter?
I am running xp mce2005 with sp 2.
Even though I am not experiencing any serious operating problems, there are just enough "screwy" situations occuring, (nothing major that causes crashes) so that I'm considering resinstalling the os.
Is there an easy way for a novice like me to re-install windows xp mce 2005 with sp 2, without loosing all the hundreds of updates that have been downloaded, not loose any of my settings, not loose ie 7 with all it's updates, etc, etc, etc?
I have dial up, so if I have to re-download all that stuff, I will probably just live with the few errors that crop up occasionally. I have a utility program (system mechanic 6) that has not eliminated these small problems.
Any recommendations regarding using the "overwrite" or "repair" procedures ?
Looking for some help that is considerably shy of re-formatting the hard drive, and doing any serious registry editting. Can anybody help?
Thanks.
Hi Puzzled - It all depends on whether or not you have an XP installation disc in you possession. If you do have one, no probs....you can go through some 'repair' options or perform a 'repair installation' which is non-destructive.
From what you have said, it sounds as though there are no really serious issues and one of the easier 'repair' options may be enough.
Just need to know if you have the disc or not.
cheers...JIM
plus, installing SP3 will include all of the updates up to SP3, severely limiting your download time.
Another option, if you have access to a high speed connection (library, computer lab, etc) you can download the patches from Microsoft as stand-alone installation packages and install them that way. The difference here is that you can end up with things you don't need.
If it's a laptop, you could borrow a friends broadband.
And while it's possible to extract the updates from a computer where they're already installed, I wouldn't want to do it.
