Wireless Connectivity

Hello,
A friend is having problems with his wireless connection. He has 2 computers which both run wireless. His wife's laptop runs fine. Jim's desktop is a couple of rooms away and has been working great. Now we get a "No connectivity" message. We changed his wireless USB but still have the same problem. Linksys has not been able to help.
Any Suggestions??

Hi CT:

When you contacted Linksys, did they have you unplug the power cord on the back of the router and wait 30 seconds and plug it back in? Sometimes just doing that will get the router to reset itself and connect the way it should. If you haven't tried that, give it a try and see if that helps.

Hey Terry - Try the simple things first. Nightowl's suggestion is definitely the first thing to try. If that doesn't fix it; try a system restore to a point before the problem occurred. These kinds of things generally don't happen on their own, they are often connected to some small change; an update install, new software added, etc....something which we have forgotten about.
If neither resetting the router nor system restore have any affect please post back. Dave or Ziggie will have some further 'troubleshooting' advice.

cheers.....JIM

If resetting the router doesn't work, see if you can pick up ANY wireless networks. Were you able to see any before? Does your laptop see other wireless networks? If you're alone in a sea of wired connections with the sole wireless, you may not see any.

Since it's a USB wireless, I'd also try it on the laptop. Disable (via Hardware Manager) the built in wireless adapter and plug in the USB adapter and see if it connects.

I've had spotty success with USB wireless. Sometimes they just quit working, for no reason.

But definitely reset the router first.

Thanks for all of the great ideas. Tried the unplug, tried a new USB, did a system restore....no luck.
Yes we can see the wireless system(s).

Do you have other USB devices on that computer? Are they working normally?

Did you try the USB w-nic on the laptop and get it to work/not work?

Thx.

Z,
The computer sees the USB wireless we just can't connect. The flash reader works OK in the same USB port.
My buddies wife will NOT let us do anything to her laptop.

Oh.

Guess I should have read that better.

Do you have access to the router itself (signing into it?)?

I would check MAC filters, WEP/WPA encryption keys, etc and make sure nothing has changed and it's all configured correctly on the machine in question.

What is the error message you get when you try to connect?

wow.

well, what did Linksys figure out for you? Now I'm just curious.

As for IE. Please define "not working". Any error messages?

Ya' know...we did SO MANY changes that I am not sure what happened....Like I said.."2 HOURS" on the phone...and then we were disconnected before a formal conclusion. My last effort was to be to download a new driver for the USB connector. I did not do that as we were able to have a connection with the wireless. I added IE as an exception to the Windows Firewall.
It will take some effort but I will get my friend to upgrade his firewall.

Terry,

The windows firewall should already be set up for IE. Are you sure you didn't actually block IE?

Thanks Dave
At this point I am not sure....of anything...LOL
I added IE to the "Exceptions" tab on the Windows Firewall Window. Basically I just emulated how my computer is set up.

I should have added that we just recently "cured" his computer of the XP Antivirus scam.

Hey Terry - Hmm, the XP Antivirus thingy is a very bad infection....when you say "cured", what do you mean exactly. Which methods, programs, etc. did you use? Did you run 'Hijack This' and is it possible that the 'cleanup' may have, accidentally, included some necessary files? Are you 100% certain that the infection is now gone?
Do you have a copy of Windows XP on disc? It may be worthwhile to run sfc /scannow. I shall defer to Dave and Ziggie's superior knowledge in that department, hopefully they will read this soon and offer some definitive advise.
In the meantime if you could please answer those questions, it may help save time with their diagnosis.

good luck mate,
JIM

We used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. All traces seem to be gone. No Pop ups. etc.
