Hi all:
Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with trying to install Service Pack 3 in Media Center Edition?? I'm working on an HP laptop with MCE and there seems to be a problem with SP3. When SP3 is installed, I can no longer access Windows Updates. I have uninstalled SP3 and everything goes back to letting me use Windows Updates again.
I have to admit I am somewhat at a loss as to what the conflict could be. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi Nightowl - I haven't experienced this first hand (am running Vista) but the issue is being reported on the net. Here is a link to a Microsoft article (scenario 2/method2):

The article here appears to back up that advice:

Apparently the install for XP SP3 is susceptible to settings and procedures, you are probably well aware of them but just in case:

Hi Jim:
Thanks for the reply.
Since my post I have found a solution for this perticular laptop. Seems the owner wasn't keeping up with updates in the first place. So by uninstalling SP3 and starting from scratch with all previous updates including SP2. After installing all the back updates and SP2, I was finally able to get SP3 to install correctly. It seems that if you try installing SP3 without the other updates it causes a big conflict which does not let you access Windows Updates properly, or not at all. I know that new service packs are suppose to be backwards compatible, however in this case that didn't work well at all.
So in the never ending world of computers I have gained some experience that I may be able to use in the future.
I do appreiciate the links you sent and thanks again.
Hey Nightowl - That's terrific you got it sorted and thanks for posting back the info....now we are all a tad wiser. I had a somewhat similar problem with a computer from one of my customers....an update for .net framework would not install and I had to uninstall every shred of every version of .net framework and then re-install from scratch....a right pain in the you-know-what!!
You did well to hunt down the solution, there are so many issues being reported with SP3 it must have been like looking for a needle in a haystack...
cheers now.....JIM
Hi all:
Also in the same line of SP3. I came across the fact that some HP computers with an AMD cpu had alot of problems, but there is information from HP and Microsoft now that will help that issue. My situation was running Intel Core Duo.
Just another tid bit of information for the computer world.
Dave, in answer to your reply, I will be glad to post when I think I might be of some help. Usually someone has already come up with answers, but I'll keep trying!!
