This may be moot in a few days, as my new computer will arrive by FedEx, however right now it is driving me crazy, upon booting windows installer comes up, but I am not installing anything, at least I don't think I am. I have to do the three fingered salute and delete it only to have it come up again and again. I have a 6 year old Dell with Windows XP.

I'll be blunt (not rude), but quite honestly how do you expect others to render assistance, other than by reading your mind? You're supplying absolutely no information other than the current problem and that you're o/s is XP. Do you have a firewall, a/v, and are they up-to-date? When was the last Windows up-date? Which service pack, 2 or 3? And this is just a start.

What were do doing just prior to this first Windows Installer trying to run? Did you do a defrag recently? The more information you provide, the easier it is to help steer you in the correct direction, without asking you pointless questions. Take care, Mindblower!

I'll be blunt too! Yes I have a firewall. I have defragged, and have a good virus, firewall. This is not the first time out of the shute. Have deleted all programs that are not absolutely necessary. I have a 6 year old Dell with PC Security virus, do not open any emails with a forward or from anyone I do not know. I run a complete scan every week on Sunday morning. I have been reluctant to tangle with msconfig.

I have installed service pack 3 and do not allow anyone to take control of my machine.

To be fair MB, he may not have known what information we needed. Throwing out a generic first post is perfectly fine as long as he's willing to answer the basic questions.

Someday I'll get around to drafting up a 'how to ask for help' document. then I'll make Dave sign it. then we'll cram it down people's throats.

~ahem~

TT -- Windows thinks there is something that needs installed / configured. This is likely from a previous installation that required a reboot, and had things to finish once it booted up.

What is it? That requires digging.

I would start with msconfig and simply look at the startup options. A program like [url=http://www.soluto.com/:3iyy8adn]Soluto[/url:3iyy8adn] can diagram everything that runs on startup for you and analyse if it's good or bad to turn off. Chances are good you'll find this in msconfig.

If not....then we get to dive into the registry. Let's start with msconfig.

There is always the option to let it install....
