Re-installing XP

Recently I needed to re-install an old version of XP on a spare computer. By old XP, it's one that only came with SP1. After installing the o/s, I preceded to install SP2 (original copy M$ mailed me). I then tried the update feature. Was pleasantly surprised I need to download SP3 first. Afterwards, and several screen prompts later (oh yes, and several reboots), I was able to download a bulk of patches (even those for IE6). Only then was I prompted to upgrade to IE8). The process was painless and smooth.

Also, my key has been used several dozen times, so I needed to access the automated process and obtain a new key. I thought this was going to be one of those long processes (experienced several in the past), but to my surprise it was also painless and smooth.

For what it's worth, things have improved at M$ land, so hat's off to those programmers ([b:ahe9bzhi]XP still rules[/b:ahe9bzhi]), Mindblower!

Hi Mindblower, Me, I'm 75 and Technically, no, not challenged, embarrassed. I can't even work a cell phone and don't possess one. But I can re-install XP SP 3 (Core 2 Duo) with my eyes closed, and that was my panacean method of fixing errors after the expiry of the three legit re-installls.

My registration and activation was done in India! So I am glad to hear Microsoft has relaxed somewhat.

But learning the hard way is the best instructor, and I have not had to reinstall in over a year. Not bad for an ancient Irishman hey? I love old XP, but have also got Windows 7 and so have two desktop toys to play with. Both very fast with multiple CPUs and heaps of RAM. I must say I have had no problems with Windows 7 (Quadcore) whatever and have grown to kinda like it! Keep on Computin' - Best wishes.
