Hey Ozbloke here I am again asking for your expert advice. If you'll help me I promise I will try to be a good girl and pay close attention and answer all questions.
I got on here to contact you when my old virus protector had expired to get a recommendation from you for a good free one but after reading some of your posts about Microsoft Security Essentials I just went ahead and I now have Microsoft Security Essentials monitoring my computer. I no longer have Super Spyware on here because I didn't know if I still need it or if it would cause problems to have it and MSE. Should I download Super Spyware? Also I downloaded the free version of Revo Uninstaller after reading about it on here. Since I had the PC Restore done my computer starts again with all those programs running and I notice on Revo Uninstaller I can choose which ones not to run using Revo Uninstaller. I mistakenly thought I could look at the old post where you told me which ones I could stop and go in and stop them. Guess things change because there are things on there that was not on there when you gave me the list so now I don't know what to stop and what not to stop. So then I downloaded again the PicPick from the link you gave me way back then, so I could do a screenshot and you could tell me which ones to stop from running on startup. Another problem, I can't figure out how to do the screenshot and send it to you.

Hey Shirl - I have to admit, I had a little chuckle when reading through your post...just a little one.

First, here is how you take a screenshot of an active window and save it with PicPick:

1) Make sure PicPick is running (should be an icon in the Notification area at the far right hand side of the Taskbar).
2) Access the startup manager in Revo and when the list of startup items is displayed, just hit the [b:3md9tv64]Alt[/b:3md9tv64] + [b:3md9tv64]PrintScreen[/b:3md9tv64] keys, both together.
3) Now the capture has been created and should open in the PicPick Image Editor. Left click on the icon (across the top) which resembles a little blue floppy disc (that is the 'Save' option).
4) A 'Save' window should open in which you can input the location and name for your saved file....type in a file name (or just leave it at default - but remember what it is) and then select the destination for the saved image (will probably be 'My Documents' by default and that would be fine). Now just hit the [b:3md9tv64]Save[/b:3md9tv64] button at the bottom of the window.

Here is how to include the screenshot in you post:

1) Click on the 'Upload attachment' link immediately under the window where you type in your message.
2) Click on the [b:3md9tv64]Browse[/b:3md9tv64] button and navigate to the location where you saved the screenshot.
3) Highlight the file you wish to attach (by left clicking on it once) and then click on the [b:3md9tv64]Open[/b:3md9tv64] button.
4) Now click on[b:3md9tv64] Add the file[/b:3md9tv64].
5) Make sure your mouse cursor is in the position where you want the screenshot displayed (within the message window) and then click on [b:3md9tv64]Place inline[/b:3md9tv64].

Microsoft Security Essentials will do a fine job for you but it would probably be wise to also install a backup scanner/remover. SUPERAntiSpyware (free) will do just fine and it will not cause any problems with MSE. It doesn't provide any real time protection but you should run a scan with it every few weeks or so to make sure nothing has got past MSE.

If you have any problems grabbing the screen capture with PicPick or including it in your message just let me know and I will try to sort it out.....I shall include some screenshots to help you.

Cheers Shirl.....Jim

The image I am sending is image 11. LOL I can't seem to save an image right so it will scroll. I am sending the attachment I did get and see if it will scroll but I don't think it will.

Now I can finally take the time to answer your speedy response in a better way and thank you for your patience with me and for your time you always take to get me on the right track. I do really appreciate you.

I downloaded Super Spyware and ran the scan. There were 17 items found. I took a screenshot but still haven't figured out how to get it to scroll. I did choose the quarantine and delete for all items. I guess MSE is not doing a great job of stopping them but I really like MSE anyway so will keep it but am so glad I can also use Super Spyware. Guess that might be why I have been having a lot of problems with my computer. (Something else I figured I would address to you after getting all set up and get these things out of the way.) Smile Did I hear you groan. LOL Bless Richard's heart, he has to put up with me all the time.
I haven't figured out how to get it to scroll but at least with your instructions I got it right how to send it.

Sorry Shirl, I should have realised you would need to scroll the window. Here's how to take a scrolling capture:

1) Open the window you wish to capture.
2) Right click on the PicPick icon (in the Notification area of the Taskbar) and hover the mouse cursor over [b:q29att7b]Screen Capture[/b:q29att7b].
3) From the ensuing menu click on [b:q29att7b]Scrolling Window[/b:q29att7b].
4) Now just click anywhere inside the window you wish to capture.
5) From then on it is exactly the same as with "active window".

What SAS is finding are just cookies, generally no real threat and nothing to worry about. Cookies are collected automatically from sites as you surf around the web.....the majority are completely harmless. Most scanning software (such as SAS) will flag cookies as a threat but many are not really, it's just that they do collect/include basic identifiers. As an example: when you visit a site like DCT where you are required to log-on, if you click on the 'Remember Me' option it is the cookie which remembers to keep you logged on so you don't need to keep typing in your username and password each time you visit. Almost all anti-virus software (such as MSE) will ignore cookies unless they are recognised as posing a serious threat (spyware cookies)...so their presence does not mean MSE is not doing a good job.

A lot of the cookies in your list are those which collect statistical data to help advertising companies analyse usage and demographics. They do not collect any personal information or identifiers, they mostly concentrate on the where and when rather than who.

You should regularly use something like CCleaner to delete temp files, browsing history, cookies, etc. Or use Internet Explorer's built-in cleanup options to do similar (CCleaner cleans more areas). Remembering though that after deleting all cookies you will be required to log back on to any site where you are a member/have registered.

The screenshot you attached (very nicely done by the way ) displays 15 startup items out of 19 total. You could just include a screenshot of the last four entries in your next post if you like.

Cheers.....Jim

OK Shirl, here's what I have for you so far:

[b:1tpb9xca]swg[/b:1tpb9xca] - Google Toolbar notifier. Notifies you if/when any attempts are made to change your default search engine away from Google. Difficult to prevent from auto-starting and does help prevent malware from changing your default search engine........................Leave enabled.
[b:1tpb9xca]MSMSGS [/b:1tpb9xca]- Windows Messenger. If you do not use Windows Messenger..........disable.
[b:1tpb9xca]IncrediMail[/b:1tpb9xca] - Ooh yuk!! (sorry, LoL). You can manually start this program anytime you wish to send/check emails...........your decision.
[b:1tpb9xca]Weather[/b:1tpb9xca] - WeatherBug software. Not too keen on this one myself, some consider it to be adware............your decision.
[b:1tpb9xca]ctfmon.exe[/b:1tpb9xca] - Office component for 'Alternative User Input' options; speech recognition, translation service, etc. Not needed but will probably just keep re-inserting into startup. Complicated procedure to get rid of it.............................disable (but will probably come back).
[b:1tpb9xca]Magentic [/b:1tpb9xca]- Is this something to do with IncrediMail?? Seems like some sort of screensaver/wallpaper changer software?.........................your decision.
[b:1tpb9xca]MSSE[/b:1tpb9xca] - Microsoft Security Essentials...............................leave enabled.
[b:1tpb9xca]LogitechCommunicationsManage[/b:1tpb9xca]r - Manager for advanced webcam features. Not needed....................disable.
[b:1tpb9xca]SunJavaUpdateSched[/b:1tpb9xca] - Update manager for Sun Java. Updates can be checked manually via Control Panel>Sun Java>Update. This will automatically notify you whenever updates for Sun Java are available.......................................your decision.
[b:1tpb9xca]DLA [/b:1tpb9xca]- Part of Sonic Solutions software.....................leave enabled.
[b:1tpb9xca]MicrosoftDefaultManager[/b:1tpb9xca] - Installed with Windows Live Essentials. Monitors the Bing search engine for any changes........................disable (but will probably keep coming back).
[b:1tpb9xca]RoxWatchTray[/b:1tpb9xca] - Roxio Media Authoring software. Not needed............................disable.
[b:1tpb9xca]CPMonitor [/b:1tpb9xca]- Roxio Cine Player (Sonic). Monitors for DVD and starts Cine Player when DVD inserted. Not needed..........disable.
[b:1tpb9xca]MSN Toolbar[/b:1tpb9xca] - The name says it all. I don't like toolbars but................................your decision.
[b:1tpb9xca]HughesNetStatusMeter.Ink[/b:1tpb9xca] - Notifies you when you you in danger of exceeding your download limit.......probably best left enabled/your decision.

Shirl, are you using Google search engine or Bing? Looks like you have toolbars and notifiers installed for both.

The list is not too bad. I'll advise you on the last 4 entries as soon as you post the screenshot.

Cheers....Jim

That was one of the ways I had tried before when I was experimenting trying to figure out how to do it to make it scroll but I tried again now and here is how it always turns out. Could I have downloaded the wrong thing when I downloaded PicPick?
I will do a screenshot of the part that didn't show and send it to you. When you sent me the link for this one you had first sent me a couple of links to choose from. One was Gadwin PrintScreen and the other was Horizon33. I don't know which one I had tried but it didn't scroll so you sent me the PicPick link. Does either of the other two links capture so it will scroll. If so which one, because like I said I don't know which one I tried back then.

Thanks for the advice on the cookies and using CCleaner. I use CCleaner pretty often but I will start using it more often and not clicking sites to stay logged in. Guess that is why I get so much junk mail which I hate with a passion.

Looks like I messed up on the second screenshot. I must be getting tired. At least that is my excuse. LOL But that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Smile

I only use Google and don't know where Bing came from. I don't see it anywhere on my toolbars. I also looked under view - toolbars and don't see it. I am going in now and take care of the ones you sent me to stop running. Uh oh guess it will have to wait. Richard just came in here and said the Mentalist is on TV so guess I'll go watch it with him first.

Thank you much Jim.

We must have been compiling messages at the same time....LoL.

OK, here is the info on the final four:

[b:iubq562l]OneNote 2007 Screen Clipper and Launcher.Ink[/b:iubq562l] - Part of the note taking program that ships with Microsoft Office 2007. Is required for the side note windows to work.......disable (if you don't use it)
[b:iubq562l]HP Digital Imaging Monitor.Ink[/b:iubq562l] - HP printer software. Monitors ink levels, etc.....................leave enabled.
[b:iubq562l]HP Image Zone Fast Start.Ink[/b:iubq562l] - Improves the startup time of HP Image Zone. If you disable it, HP Image Zone takes a long time to start up only the first time you run it. Subsequent startups are much faster than the first time. Not needed............................disable.
[b:iubq562l]Logitech Desktop Messenger.Ink[/b:iubq562l] - Automatically checks for software upgrades and new products, services and special offers from Logitech. Not needed.......disable.

Shirl, you should still use the 'remember me' button on sites where you are a member. The cookies will not hurt and it saves you needing to sign in all the time.

Gadwin does not include a capture scrolling windows feature. Don't even remember the other one, the name doesn't even ring a bell. All these screen capture programs are about the same in terms of ease of use Shirl. Have a read and look through some of the links here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-fr ... tility.htm

Bing is part of the MSN Toolbar....look across the toolbar and you should see a Bing search box incorporated.

Cheers...Jim
(enjoy The Mentalist - I don't think we have that show here).

The mentalist was pretty good. I hardly ever watch TV, in fact only watch a couple of shows. Richard comes in and lets me know when they come on because I never keep track of when.

I noticed that the first screenshot of the running programs I sent you was before I installed Super Spyware. It is not showing on the one I sent tonight either because it is the 3rd one down. Should I leave it enabled or do I just need to open it when I am going to run a scan?

Guess the reason I couldn't see Bing anywhere is because I also don't like a lot of tool bars showing and MSN is one of them I don't have showing. Thanks for letting me know it is OK to click on remember me. One of my biggest problems is not knowing what is OK to do and what is not OK. Guess that has been what has gotten me in a lot of trouble at times. LOL
Also thanks for the link to check out the screensavers.

I guess I will wait and see how the computer does after getting this stuff taken care of before I holler help again. Getting these programs stopped, installing Revo Uninstaller and Super Spyware may take care of some things. If not you may hear from me again tomorrow or soon after. LOL Personally I don't think the guy who supposedly did a PC restore for me knew what he was doing. I will let you know what I wind up with on the screensavers.

Thanks again Jim for coming to my rescue.

I looked at the site from the link you sent about screenshots and it looks like PicPick is the best one. I don't know why I can't make the shots with scrolling work. I didn't have any trouble before when I downloaded it. Is it possible that because now I have internet explorer 8 installed has anything to do with it?

Hey Shirl,

Re SAS.....it does not need to start up with Windows and does not need to be running in the background. It does not include any real time protection and as an on-demand scanner can be started manually whenever required. So no, do not leave it enabled.....disable it and just run it when needed.

PicPick is the best one, yes. I hadn't used it before but I downloaded it just so I could help you work through it. I am impressed, it is indeed a very good freeware. Don't quite understand why it will not capture a scrolling window for you. I followed the steps as related in my earlier message and had no problems at all. Internet Explorer 8 (or any other version for that matter) should not make any difference at all.

Leave it with me and I'll put together a guide with pictures for you and we'll see how you go with that.

Cheers....Jim

Thank you Jim. I feel like it must be something caused by my computer that is causing the problem with PicPick because it worked fine back when I downloaded it last year in Sept when you were helping me with System 32 appearing upon startup. I have been having some problems with my computer lately and one of the problems was when I would try to clean out my temporay files, cookies etc on internet options I could not clean it out. Now that I have the Revo Uninstaller on here it cleans everything out good so do you think it might be worth a try if I uninstall PicPick and reinstall it.

Thanks,
Shirl

Hey Shirl - I suppose it would be worth a try mate, it can't hurt and just may fix it.

The issue with PicPick is in itself no biggee but it may be, as you say, indicative of another unrelated problem.

It worries me a little that you cannot use Internet Explorer options to clean up. Do you get an error message? How do you know it is not working?

Cheers....Jim

When I run internet options and try to clean out the files it runs but when I view the files everything is still all there. When I run the clean up on Revo Uninstaller it cleans everything out but afterwards, doing nothing except going into just one site I can check internet options and view the files, it is full again. Also sometimes and often I try to click on something to go to another place on a website it pops up and says I am not connected to the internet even tho I know that I am still connected. I can back space and it will take me right back to where I left but I might have to try 2 or 3 times for it to go to the other place. Another thing I wanted to ask you about is, there was an icon in the task bar to show the percentage of the font and it has disapeared. How can I get it back?
