Old Age Slowdowns

I use a Windows XP system at work, which, alas, I wish was running ubuntu, but now I can't remember why I'm not.

Every year or so I have to reinstall XP because everything just becomes so slow and sluggish that it's not worth waiting for.

What is up with this? Why must Windows bog down when I'm doing the same basic functions I was a year ago? It makes my brain hurt.

This isn't a request for help, just a general complaint. Carry on.

So you clean your hard disk of temp and crap files, defrag it (including the registry), clear up the registry of unwanted entries, and still have a slower computer; well, you must have a ghost in the machine. BTW, this is not help, just covering all the bases, Mindblower!

Yeah, I do that, but it's just windows creep. ~shrug~

After initial install, i can let it run for weeks with no slow down.

A year later, by the end of day one, it needs rebooted again. Very sad.

When I first read this subject title I thought a kindred spirit had posted....I see now it is related to computers and not to people.

Sorry Jim, I'm feeling the years, but not wearing them yet. My kinds have a bad habit of making me feel older than I am.

funny i had xpig installed for 6 years till hd died it ran fine!

You just need to learn how to clean it once in a while scan it for crapware and run crapcleaner.
if you have not cleaned the reg in a while run that feature too use its backup(don,t do like some and run it and or others weekly or more i just run it after major uninstalls).

do a defrag once a year. and if its still sluggish start run,sfc/ scannow
still sluggish Run HJT(hijack this)And post log in an appropriate forum.

I even beta tested software on that machine. it ran well till the day it died.

I had to manually hunt and kill and correct a few things. googled a few times for stumppers lol.

win98 needed the yearly reinstall. xp don,t.
Find whats making it slow fix it. plenty of free programs for finding whats running. task manager a start.
If its slow there is a reason its not voodoo. M.E had that....

I do run malware scans weekly, and clean the registry occasionally.

Virus scanning is done weekly, I don't worry about real time virus protection (yes, I live dangerously).

I've defragged, and done an sfc /scannow

Hijack this shows nothing too unusual. A few BHO's that were easy to remove but not the root cause of the problem.

It's not a processor/memory issue. Those numbers don't get affected. just...things take longer to do. The processor doesn't show any intesive processes, it just....thinks longer.

Until I reinstall...

Huh. Maybe it is software....

Ziggie, have you checked your registry? That is clean it of the unwanted/unneeded references as well as defrag it (apart from the harddisk). Many forget this process and over time, can bog you down, Mindblower!

How do you defrag just the registry? I use Ccleaner to shrink the registry...

So I tried both registry defraggers. One of them said my registry was 0kb, not to worry about defragging it. That one disappeared mighty quick.

The other one said the registry was only 2%defragged, but I ran it anyway. Things seem....slightly better.

The thing that gets me is I watch Task Manager and the processor isn't doing anything. (it's at 99% idle). Yet I sit and I wait for things to happen. It's like...it's like it's taking a while for the command to get to the processor...

Virus free.
Spyware free.
Crap free (according to crap cleaner).
Defragged registry.
Defragged Hard Drive.
Kicked the box.

~shrug~ I have no idea.
