This may sound like a silly problem to some of you, but I could use some help as I can't for the life of me find out how to solve (or maybe undo) this thing.
I like to place the few shortcuts I keep on my desktop to my personal liking. Now, call me weird, but that sometimes includes placing them next to each other with an accuracy of milimeters. I used to be able to do this, by clicking on them and while holding down my left mouse button smoothly slide them to the desired position. It's been quite some time now that when I try to do it, their final position is not the one I was going for as they seem to sort of jump instead of slide.
I've made a number of changes in the Visual Effects tab which I thought were responsible, but even restoring them didn't change this behavior.
Any ideas/ suggestions?

I think this was there in XP, it's still there in 7 -- when you right click on the desktop, and go to the view menu, you should have an align to grid option. Make sure that's off and try again. If it is off, turn it on then back off in case you have a phantom setting.
Oh -- nothing silly about that at all. I like mine where I like mine too -- of course, mine happen to fit nicely in a grid.

I don't use any of the options in the right-click menu, so "align to grid" was off, turned it on and off, but no joy.
The jumpy moves I described do not align the shortcuts to grid positions, they're random - a little too much to the left/ right and/ or higher/ lower I actually want the icon to be.
Any more ideas?

Just kidding, I'm the same. I think it's called anal retentive...or something similar.
Just a thought; do you have any 3rd party launch bars or docking stations installed? Any 3rd party apps which would mess with the shell?
To help confirm, you could download [url=http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html:30xpzgd5]ShellExView[/url:30xpzgd5], [i:30xpzgd5]portable[/i:30xpzgd5] freeware from NirSoft. This will identify and allow you to easily disable any non-Microsoft shell extensions.
Best way to proceed is to use ShellExView to disable [b:30xpzgd5]all[/b:30xpzgd5] non-MS shell extensions and see if that solves the problem. If it does, then start enabling them again, one at a time, until the problem returns.
If it doesn't, then I have been about as much help as a back pocket in a singlet.
ShellExView is a handy tool to have on hand anyway.

After looking up what "anal retentive" actually means, I certainly prefer to just be weird
No launch bars, no docking stations, no new 3rd party apps around the time this started - only one that comes to mind that I now have and didn't before is ... Avast.
I'll give the ShellExView procedure a try and report back.

Don't put too much store in the 'official' definition FD. In common parlance it simply means; overly fussy (or finicky).... and is often associated with neatness/tidiness.
