What do you mean "i can type in an address and get any site"? This looks like a Firefox problem. What version of FF are you using? When did this problem happen? Did you just upgrade from one FF version to another?

sorry 'bout the delay "Mindblower" - hectic life round here lately,we've had a world cup for rugby down here which you know about of course, Canada played in it - we won - anyway, i can type an URL in to the location bar and get the site, also type anything in to the other search space and get a result - Firefox v 7.0.1 and yes i recently upgraded - have been to their help site without success - haven't got the previous setup file for an older version so really i am just waiting for another upgrade but get a bit sick of waiting and as mentioned I E works fine - just thought that maybe someone could suggest a tweak or similar to get FF back to normal - thanks for replying

Here is what is causing some confusion: In your original post you said, "[i:1mmf1zyb]Firefox wont open[/i:1mmf1zyb]". Now, if FF won't 'open' then how are you managing to type anything into anywhere?
Firefox not opening means that when you try to start FF, either by double clicking on the desktop shortcut or by clicking on FF in the quick start toolbar, nothing is happening - FF does not run at all. So you would not be able to type a URL into the navigation bar.
Can you actually get FF to run? Please explain exactly what it is that FF will not do - do you mean FF will not open when you click on a link in an email or Word doc perhaps, or maybe it will not load pages directly from your Bookmarks??
Most anomalies involving FF are caused by incompatible add-ons. Do you have add-ons installed? Do you have any 3rd party firewall installed - such as Online Armor or Outpost?

Hi Ozbloke - at the top of the page reads Problem loading page - in the middle of the screen a large window with a yellow icon with exclamation mark within, heading is Server not found - nearly a blank page i guess
recently changed from a DLink modem to Belkin, setup from their help site by 'phone - maybe it is also a router and a firewall? AV is Avast - don't know much about addons - clicked on "tools", in heave black print is

Hey maurylen - Seeing how FF is affected and Internet Explorer is not, it must be something which is specific to FF and not something common to both - such as the router settings. If the router was not set up correctly, neither would work.
Not sure what you are seeing when you click on Tools in FF, but you should see something like this:

Still think this is most likely related somehow to security software. Can you disable Avast Web Rep and see if that helps? Also try temporarily disabling Avast altogether, just for a few minutes, and then try FF again. Right click on the Avast icon in the system tray, hover the mouse over "avast shields control" and click on "Disable for 10 minutes".
What other, if any, security software do you have installed?
Hi Jim, click tools, similar apart from no WOT and 3rd set, browsing & history greyed out - other software malwarebytes, ccleaner, spybotSD, superantispyware - no difference after disabling avast and web rep - have to agree seems to be a FF problem but as i said their help site was useless - still open to suggestions though, cheers
I've found conflicts with MBAM, SAS and Avast before. If Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware are the free versions and running in the background, use their settings preferences to stop them from auto starting with Windows - there is zero real time protection involved anyway, so it won't hurt. In the meantime, right click on the system tray icons and exit/close both programs, then try FF again.
I doubt it will be anything to do with Spybot but, if closing MBAM and SAS doesn't work, try the same thing with Spybot.

I'm pretty much at the end of ideas anyway - about all I can suggest now is to try running FF via a fresh (new) profile. Here is a page which will step you through the process of creating a new profile: http://support.mozilla.com/en-.....g-profiles
A new profile will have you starting from scratch and take any corruptions out of the equation. Don't worry, both the default (old) profile and the new one will be available via the profile manager - it's very easy to switch between profiles.
Set up a new (fresh) Firefox profile, make sure that new profile is selected (highlighted) in the profile manager, then run FF again and see if that fixes the problem.

that all turned to s**t Jim - created a new folder but after restarting, this window appeared (and continues to do so)
"Firefox is already running but is not responding" etc
I'm sure you know the rest, anyway, i uninstalled then reinstalled v7, restarted, but still the window appears - i had to open this message in OE - spose i could do a "system restore" but seems to be a never ending, continuous problem, as long as OE works i may as well use that - and - reformat and reinstall xp would solve a lot but can't really be bothered with all the resetting and would probably miss some settings and be back in the s**t again
wonder if Bart can pull another one off this afternoon - never leave him out of a trifecta

Hey maurylen - Glad we finally found a cure, corrupt profiles are a common source of problems. Had an issue with FF7 myself just recently which was solved by simply creating a new profile.
Had a funny day myself. Me and the missus went to a special Melbourne Cup day at bowls and ended up playing against a good mate. He bought around 50 tickets in different sweeps and had every horse covered except nos 3, 9 and 12. We joked with him that we should be going to the TAB and betting on those three horses. Buggar me if they didn't end up running one, two and three. I'm still chuckling about it - I had thought I was unlucky but he plays me off a break...LOL
