So how do you download these updates if the infection has killed the computers ability to connect to the net?

The good thing about MSS is the latest updates are built in. kind of hard to manually update SAS or MalwareBytes if you don't know what you're doing.

They are all tools with the same purpose, but different methods of achieving the goal. Put them in your toolbox and use the appropriate tool when needed.

Well if you are missing something FD then so am I. Not quite sure what Dave is getting at that there myself.

If your scanner/removal software is not up-to-date, it doesn't matter which route you go, updated definitions or entire program....if you are unable to download anything, you are in exactly the same position, either way.

Yes well MSS expires every 10 days and requires a complete fresh download to get the latest definitions. Not sure who would want to re-download 70+ MB's every 10 days in order to keep MSS "in the toolbox"....not me, that's for sure.

No one said this "toolbox" is physical or tangible. What I mean is that if you are presented with a situation needing such a tool you have a resource. You know about the tool, its' abilities and where to get it if needed.

My point is - when faced with a problem computer that can't access the internet it is simpler to download a complete tool with up to date definitions from another computer and use it than to have a tool with outdated definitions that you can't easily update.
