As you know I recommend Acronis True Image for backing up your computer.
I know the price of $49.99 has prevented many visitors from buying the software.
Acronis was kind enough to offer Daves Computer Tips readers/visitors a VERY special deal!
Now, through September 19th you can purchase Acronis True Image for only $9.99!
Visit [url:3qp02d7a]http://send.onenetworkdirect.net/z/15430/rn_a70697/[/url:3qp02d7a]
During the checkout process use coupon code "[b:3qp02d7a]ATI80[/b:3qp02d7a]" without the quotes and the purchase price changes to $9.99!
I took up that great offer and installed Acronis. Looks great.
Just a couple of days earlier by coincidence, I had - after thinking about back up for years - bought and installed a Maxtor OneTouch 4 unit, and without really understanding how....... thought I could simply delete the built in operating system in the Maxtor, and then install Acronis to take its place.
The Maxtor is 320 GB, so I assumed that the 30.8 GB used space on my 295 GB capacity hard drive will allow me to make a full back up of my system on that separate drive, and still leave plenty of room to do whatever I want/need to do in the way of backing up files etc.
Reading a bit more in the Acronis instructions I am now not so sure that I understand what I am doing. If I simply wipe the Maxtor software, and then hit any sort of trouble with installing and using Acronis, I imagine I wont be able to restore the Maxtor system, and it wont even make a very good fishing sinker !
Just initial probes have suggested that Acronis will need more than 300 GB, so I now have doubts about my understanding, and will be delighted if anyone out there can shed any light on the subject (some "how to" instruction would be most welcome, as would advise as to what to back up - IE. full system, or just "My Documents")
Well, I've not used Acronis, so I can't speak as to that part of it.
The Files on the maxtor drive I would burn to a CD in case you want them. usually those files are the files necessary for the "one-touch" features of the drive. Whether you want those or not is up to you (if they don't take up much room, I wouldn't worry about it).
As for what to back up, I recommend backing up everything. You never know when you need a file that is in some obscure place. If space is an issue, then certainly concentrate on your data files (My Documents, etc.). However, make sure you know where all your data is. Some programs will hide data in odd places. At a minimum, I would grab the entire Documents and Settings folder.

Hey thanks for the advice Zig, I will have a closer look at the Maxtor software, and have a try at burning the files onto a CD as you suggest. I am not too worried about the 'one touch' facility but it would be nice to have the possibility of restoring the Maxtor system if I find for any reason I am not satisfied with Acronis.
I will also need to check out the space issue before deciding what to back up, but on the face of it, the Maxtor has almost as much capacity as my computer, and currently my computer hard drive is only about 10% used, so in theory I should be able to back up just about everything.
Interesting to see that Acronis changed their minds about the 'deal', so I was lucky to have jumped in quickly !
