Windows Live Login is a PITA

OS is Windows Vista Home Premium. Using IE8 as browser.

For the past couple of weeks, I have been forced to login to Windows Live - prerequisite to Hotmail account - prior to IE8 directing me to my homepage. It refuses to "remember me" in spite of the fact that I am certain that the checkbox has been checked. I view the whole thing as unnecessary and it is, indeed, a PITA. Help anyone?

Respectfully,

Richard

Hey Richard - A couple of possibilities here mate:

1) Have you set up Internet Explorer to "Delete browsing history on exit"? If that option is enabled then that includes deleting all cookies too which means that any persistent cookies which maintain log-in will also be deleted and you'll need to keep logging back in again. Open IE and go to Tools>Internet Options, then click on the General tab. Make sure the is no checkmark (tick) in the box next to "Delete browsing history on exit". If there is, remove the tick then click Apply, OK.

2) Check that your "zone' is set correctly: Still in Internet Explorer Tools>Internet Options, now click on the Security Tab. At the top of the window you will see..."Select a zone to view or change security settings". Make sure "Internet" is selected (highlighted) in the box underneath. If not, click on the 'Internet' icon to highlight it and then click Apply, OK.

Do you use something like CCleaner to regularly clean your system? Log-in details are 'remembered' per medium of persistent cookies, software such as CCleaner deletes all cookies (unless added to a list of exceptions), thereby effectively cancelling your log-in and necessitating that you go through it all over again. Any software which manages cookies, cleans cookies, etc?

I assume you are not utilizing IE's InPrivate browsing mode? Because that will also disable persistent cookies.

Will leave it at that for now, they are the most likely causes. Get back to me if none of that works and we'll have another look.

Cheers mate...Jim

G'mornin', Jimbeaux -

The settings were OK. Nothing to change. I use CCleaner occasionally but not on a scheduled basis. I am certain that the "remember me" box was checked. Could this be something recent that MS has instituted and that I have no control over? Befuddles this old mind.

Thanks for the try. Anything else that you can think of?

Do you have any toolbars installed?
If you have the Windows Live toolbar installed, try disabling it and relaunching your browser.

Hey Richard - No, I don't believe it has anything to do with changes made by MS. It will be something local, specific to your setup.

Chad is leading you in the right direction mate. Toolbars can cause all sorts of weird issues. Try Chad's suggestion first and if that doesn't fix it, try running IE in 'no add-on' mode: Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools and select Internet Explorer (No add-ons). If the problem goes way then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

Let us know and, again, we can take it from there.

Cheers...Jim

Another cause could be if you installed any of the Window "Live" programs - writer, photo gallery, mesh, etc. They install a service, Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant, which can cause this behavior. You can disable it from the Services Applet.

I'm in the "no add-ons" mode.  Tried to "reset" my login info in order to make sure that the "remember me" box was checked.  It was.  Same old stuff.  No Windows Live tool bar.  It might be too late, at this date, but would a System Restore to a date preceding the onset of this malady do any good?  You know that I'm a neophyte at this stuff so I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

My many thanks,

Richard

Type services.msc into the start menu. In the results right click on Services and click Run as Administrator.

When the new window opens scroll down to the W's (they are alphabetical).

Do you see an entry for Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant? If so, what is listed under the Status and Startup Type columns?

Hey, Folks -

First, a thank you to those who have attempted to help.  Much appreciated.

Secondly, I've been out of sorts lately since  my wife, Shirley, has been in the hospital and now recovering from lung surgery.  Will most likely come home this Tuesday.  Sorry for the delay in posting.

The problem somehow solved itself.  Got frustrated with slow loading and generally lethargic computer so I used CCleaner, Malware Bytes Anti Malware.  No detections.  Then I thought of defragmenting the hard drive.  It's supposed to be on a schedule and I checked to make sure that the appropriate boxes were checked.  Ran the defragmenter anyway (did you say "desperation"?)  Took a considerable amount of time - I think - since the last scheduled operation was only a few days ago.  Lo, and behold, the PITA problem is gone!  Needless to say, this neophyte has absolutely no explanation why a simple defrag should be involved in my malady.  No matter, things are back to normal and I'm a reasonably happy camper once again.

Oh, I DID follow the suggestions given with no effect whatsoever.

My many thanks again.

Richard

Dave and Jimbeaux -

Thanks again.  This is the third time into the hospital for procedures since the first week of December for Shirley.  She's spent as much time there as she has at home.  This last one should be the cure-all.  So sayeth her surgeon.  He's the best.  Sure hope that he's right.

Shirley has steadfastly clung to XP while not liking the Vista on my machine.  She has a couple of minor issues which she may lean on y'all to correct.  Has MS support for XP expired?  Just curious.

Gotta head into Nashville and see my "Hon".  I really 'preciate you folks.

Hey Richard - End of support date for XP is April 2014. Now that does not mean that XP will no longer work properly or anything like that. It just means there will no longer be any Windows updates issued nor support tickets initiated. I don't see that as a huge problem, XP is a very mature OS, so any bugs and vulnerabilities should have well and truly been dealt with by now.

What it does mean is that most hardware manufacturers will drop XP support for drivers, so clean installing XP on newer hardware or replacing peripheral hardware with newer devices will become very much problematical.

Cheers mate...Jim
