Three minor (?) pain-in-the-butt problems

Unlike some of the truly monumental problems posted by other members, those listed below do not approach that of world hunger or a natural catastrophy yet they are proving to be a classic PITA.

1. On three or four sites that I regularly visit, I choose to be automatically logged in. I check the appropriate boxes expecting all to be well upon my next visit. Hah! Like me, the machine fails to "remember" and a manual login is in order.

2. When attempting to click on a link or other reference, the cursor will sporadically jump a half inch to several inches in no particular direction. One must chase this thing around the page until, finally, it settles in position long enough to make the click. It is intermittent and very disconcerting.

3. On no particular site, the page will lock up. Clicking the mouse on anything or operating the scroll wheel does no good. Usually lasts for a minute or two and then - Voila! - things jump around a bit and settle down to normal. On occasion I must resort to the ctrl-alt-del solution. Hate that!

Do PC's develop symtoms of Alzheimer's or schizophrenia or are these things reasonably repairable? Worse yet, do they adopt the maladies of their owner?

Respectfully,

Richard

Hi Richard - I may be able to help you with item #1. Are you cleaning out internet temporary files, either via Internet Explorer's options menu or 3rd party program such as CCleaner? This will include the deletion of any cookies which hold your logon information for certain sites...(like Dave's Computer Tips Forum), necessitating a fresh logon next time you visit the site. There are various methods for excluding all or certain cookies from the cleanup operation depending on which method you use. I use CCleaner and delete all the cookies and then just logon afresh at the next visit.....the same as you have been doing.

Items #2 and #3 I don't have a clue.....although I lean toward a problem with the mouse...have you ever tried using a different mouse?

cheers mate and a very Merry Christmas to you and yours,
JIM

Richard,

Ozbloke is spot on (as usual) with his answer for #1.

#2. What type mouse are you using? Optical or the older roller ball type?

#3. This is generally a symptom of sites that are hosted on slow servers, connected by slow connections, servers that are overburdened, or some combination of those. Usually it is sites that call for information from many other sites. This happens in the background and the user is generally not aware. Some of the larger news sites, as an example, draw information from other news sites, advertising sites, etc. Of course they often times are running some pretty big scripts to give you that "Wiz Bang" functionality they think everyone wants. Add all these up and you can get some pages that seem to take forever to load.

Ah, but if it were that easy. Your computer (CPU, RAM, connection, etc) plays into this also. If you have a slow computer with a slow connections some of the larger scripts these sites try to run can take eons to load!

Heh, they beat me to it.

As for #3 though, computers have been known and are known (especially Windows computers) to suffer from what Leo Notenboom (ask-leo.com) calls Software Rot.

My workstation at work experiences this quite often and I rebuild it about every 15 months because of this.

This occurs especially if you install/delete several programs, but can happen just from using your computer day to day.

As for the first two, the other guys know what they're talking about, I'd listen to them.

Gotsta go. Merry Christmas all.
