Hi ,

I am new to the Forum and have a problem with Vista - I am a beginner / improver and am willing to learn.
Sometimes after I have left the computer on but unattended for 20 minutes or so I come back and the screen is blank - Just a silvery sort of colour with a hint of pale purple and some indistinct lines across.
Sometimes I can see the screen items but they are duplicated and out of position.
There is nothing else I can do so I have had to switch off by the Power button and reboot.
Everything boots up again OK but it keeps happening and has been going on for a while now.
Sometimes the same thing happens if I put the lid down - The screen does not come back to life - Just blank or indistinct lines etc
Can anyone help please?
My computer is
Model H P Pavilion dv9000 Series Notebook PC
dv9720ea
Product Number KMO43EA#ABU
Date Of Purchase 22/2/2008
Operating System Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit)

Hello Lancastrian and welcome to the forum!

It sounds like your computer is set to sleep or hibernate after 20 minutes. There were some problems with various hardware/vista combinations and those functions. They enter sleep/hibernate OK, but they don't come out of that state properly. A good start is updating the BIOS and device drivers.

The first thing I would do is update the bios - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp39001-39500/sp39466.exe[/url:vgooyo49]. Then I would update the device drivers for your other hardware:
Chipset - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37730.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Video - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37734.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Quick Launch buttons - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40139.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Quick Touch Software - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38001-38500/sp38358.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Ricoh card reader - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL19729/ob-55777-1/sp37726.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Modem - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37725.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Audio Driver (If you have a CONEXANT audio device) - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40170.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Audio Driver (If you have a REALTEK audio device) - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp38501-39000/sp38899.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Wireless (if you have a BROADCOM card) - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41501-42000/sp41675.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Wireless (if you have an INTEL card) - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41001-41500/sp41263.exe[/url:vgooyo49]
Wireless (if you have an ATHEROS card) - [url:vgooyo49]ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37903.exe[/url:vgooyo49]

If we get the device drivers updated we can see if that fixes it. If it doesn't help we'll look into some other options.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the help.
I have updated the Bios and have not had a recurrence since then.
I am about to update the Drivers but am uncertain about some of them as I am learning as I go.
I don't know which sort of Audio Driver I have - How do I find out?
I don't know which sort of Wireless I have - how do I find out?
My wireless details are a Prestige 600 series Router called ZyXEL and my connection is to Virgin Broadband.

Here's how you find which device you have:
Go to Control Panel>System. In the left panel click Device Manager, which will open in a new window.

For the Audio driver go down to sound, video, and game controllers and click the "+" sign. Look for the name Realtek or Conexant (there will be one or the other). That is the brand of your audio driver.
For Wireless look under Network Adapters and do the same.

Hi JIM,
Nice to hear from you.
Have supported my home town team Wigan through thick & thin.
It's been a long and unbelievable journey from Non - League Football which it was when I first started watching as a boy in the 1950's to the Premier League.
To answer your question it has to be United not City for no better reason than my wife supports United.
We shall be watching the United v City game on TV tomorrow.
Bye for now from a freezing & foggy Lancashire.

Hey Lancastrian - I forgot about Wigan...shame on me!! They have been very unlucky so far this season, have been playing well and, at times, not getting the results they deserved. My team's story is not quite so illustrious...as a lad in Middlesex (during the 50's) my nearest team was Brentford.....nuff said! I've always had a soft spot for West Ham and Spurs so they have become the teams I follow.
Yes, I shall be glued to the TV set too.....2 great games....your local derby [i:1s6us158]and[/i:1s6us158] Chelsea v Arsenal...brilliant!!!!

cheers and beers from a sunny, warm Bundaberg in Queensland.

JIM.
