That's interesting! Hate to bother you, but were they any more specific? Something like install with only 2GB or install with only one stick. Trying to see if it was a size limitation or a number of installed sticks issue.
Either way I'll have to put that in my mental 'filing cabinet' for similar issues with Asus motherboards.
On a side note, I've oft wondered about the point of having a motherboard with 4 slots but it will only run efficiently if you don't fill all 4 slots. What's the point?
Anyway, glad you identified and solved your freezing issue. Odd that you have to have less RAM. did you maybe have a bad RAM chip and/or mismatched RAM? (Different speeds / different sizes, etc).
Hey Zig - Your point about the 4 slots is a very good one. Furthermore, Vista (32bit) will recognise only 3gb of RAM...given that there must be an even number of RAM sticks and that 512mb sticks are now as scarce as rocking horse manure, how is one supposed to achieve that?
Zig and Dave - BTW: In a post dated 8th March to Ryan I said this:
[i:3ww72z8g]"5) Remove 2GB RAM (of the 4GB you have) and try running the machine with just 2GB...some have reported that this fixed the freezing problem for them"[/i:3ww72z8g]
I picked that up while cruising the forums searching for answers, they didn't say anything about installing the OS with only 2gb RAM though.
cheers....JIM
He said only put in 2gb instead of my 4 gb. After installing windows (and the hotfix for this problem) i put all 8gbs in (4 ram chips). It's size limitation. Not just Asus motherboards, FYI. I'm using 64 bit windows as well (XP 64 and Vista 64 both had this problem).
XP and vista 32 bit will only recognize 3gb ram and can STILL RUN IT (but not efficiently).
If i have the problem i can;t just take ram out. I have to reinstall windows with 2gb ram. Asus tech said that windows has a probelm and having the extra memory makes windows "lose files in installation, even though it says it installed successfully" which makes it freeze.
Sorry in a rush. Hope this helps.
I can go over this later again if you still have questions.
Ryan,
There is definitely more to it than that. I think Asus wasn't being entirely upfront with you. I've installed 64bit OS's with 4GB and 6GB installed and have never had an issue. HP, Dell, Toshiba desktops and laptops - no problems.
Either way. It's water under the bridge, as the problem is fixed! Now make an image of the drive with the working/clean installation.
