I had removed Norton anti-virus from my pc after it expired. A few days later I used Windows Vista system restore to uninstall a driver that a video driver. To my angst I realized that I had restored to a date before I had removed Norton. From this point onward I have been unable to connect to the internet when Windows is running. I am able to connect using a utility that is built into my ASUS motherboard (Splashtop browser). I have tried re-installing Vista (not a clean install), but this didn't solve the problem. I have checked all the network settings and everything seems to check out. I am at a lost as what to do to get a connection to the internet from Windows.
I am connecting through a DSL modem and earthlink is my internet service provider.
Any ideas?
Hi Wilbou - How long ago did you perform the system restore? I am assuming the internet connection was working okay prior to that? If it wasn't too long ago, go back into system restore and 'undo' the previous restore. You can uninstall device drivers via 'Control Panel/Device Manager'. Locate the device in the list and open it up (double left click), click on the 'Driver' tab and then click on the 'Uninstall' button.
Have you tried simply turning the modem/router (assuming it is a combo) off for a few minutes and then switching it back on again? If that doesn't work, try going through the modem/router's configuration settings again, your ISP can help you with that if necessary.
let us know how you get on,
Cheers...JIM
Hey Bill - Well, I really don't know what else to suggest. Please answer a couple of questions and maybe someone else may have some ideas.
What security software are you using now that Norton is gone (AV, AS, etc.)? Are you using any firewall?
sorry I can't be of more help, be patient mate.. there are some very clever people here!
cheers now....JIM
Jim,
I appreciate all the help. I am using AVG anti-virus, Windows defender and Windows firewall.
The confusion comes from the fact that at this moment I am connected to the internet using a utility on my ASUS motherboard (Splashtop browser), my existing DSL modem and Linksys wireless router with the pc in question. Two of my kids who are home from college for the holidays are able to connect wireless through my router/modem with no connectivity issues/problems. Doesn't make much sense too me.
Thanks again,
Bill
Hi Bill,
Welcome to the forum!
This is but one reason I don't like software from Symantec. Norton is nearly impossible to remove! I image part of the problem is norton made some changes to the network stack.
I'm short on time at the moment, but I would start with [url=http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039:1y3qfhgs]The Norton Removal Utility[/url:1y3qfhgs] and try to reset the winsock catalog using the following instructions:
1. Click on Start button.
2. Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.
3. Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run Command Prompt as Administrator. Allow UAC elevation request.
4. Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt, and then press the Enter key.
5. Restart the computer.
