Install IE8 - Yes or No??

Hi - Just received notification (via Windows Update) that IE8 is ready to be downloaded and installed. Should I go ahead now or still wait a while? I heard from a mate the other day (also using Vista) who had already installed IE8 and he had a problem opening attachments which were "word" files. A quick check through Google revealed the problem is caused by IE8, the solution...uninstall IE8 and revert back to IE7. It leads me to doubt if IE8 is fit for human consumption yet?

BTW Dave - I am having problems with the log-on system here again. I am not running any cleaners or deleting cookies but I have to log-on again each visit. Anyone else experiencing this or is it just me?

thanks all,
JIM

did you check the remember me box?

I installed IE8 on my office workstation and have had no problems with it. i don't use it for a lot, but it's worked every time for me.

But I've heard lots of horror stories. So...your mileage may vary.

Hey Zig - Yes mate, I always check that box......thanks for asking!

Yes, it's the horror stories which create the hesitancy.....IE7 is working fine for me (although my default/primary browser is FF) so I think, why tamper with it.

thanks for the reply mate,
JIM

Well, it appears M$ have, in a round about way, admitted that IE8 may not yet be ready. They have put up a tool for download which changes the status of the IE8 update from 'important' to 'optional', thereby disabling automatic delivery:

Ceases will never wonder!!

Jim, as for your login issues - try deleting the cookies for davescomputertips.com and trying again. Sounds like a cookie may be damaged.

I've been using Chrome more and more. The one thing that stops me from using it all the time is the lack of plug-in support. Specifically X-marks. I've come to rely way too much on X-marks syncing my passwords and bookmarks, that I don't know how to browse without it!!

Hey Zig - Thanks for that mate....I have deleted the cookies and tried again....all seems to be well now. Thanks again!!

Yes, well Chrome [i:2r2tefbk]is[/i:2r2tefbk] a very nice browser...I commented in an earlier post that Chrome would make up some ground on FF once the proposed add-ons become available. At the moment most people are in the same boat as you, with favourite add-ons being the sticking point.
I still have my reservations over privacy issues with Chrome/Google however so not too sure if I would ever make the transition.

cheers mate....JIM

Chrome, Firefox, IE, Opera...I don't trust any of them with data. Since I gave all my information to Google years ago, what's one more piece by using their browser?

That and I don't do anything I'm ashamed of. It's easier that way.

Glad your login issues are fixed. That's great news.

Jim, I may have causes your log in issues. I deleted the forum cache on the server earlier in the week when I was creating a backup.

As far as IE8 goes... I would do it. Why not? It is more standards compiant than 7 and has some other improvements. Only a very small percentage are experiencing any problems, which would be the case with any software. Besides, I know you have a good backup!

Oh, okay...thanks Dave. That would explain it.

I think you are right about IE8 too...besides the excellent back-ups I always have the option to uninstall if necessary.

thanks for that mate,
JIM

Not yet! Waiting for SP1. Run it with Spybot with immunization turned on. Try Google and Yahoo toolbars. Needs to be a little more stable. Seems to have potential though!

Hi Sirpaul - Or should I say, your Lordship.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your thoughts. I've now installed IE8, as per Dave's advice. I haven't struck any problems thus far but it is very early days and I predominantly use Firefox anyway so that is only to be expected. I'll post back if any major issues crop up.

thanks again,
JIM.

Okay here is the latest...didn't take long!! I suffered the same fate as my mate and, apparently, many others. After installing IE8 I could not open a .doc email attachment. Not a real big deal in the scheme of things but it is a right PITA and makes one wonder just what else may be broken. Anyway, bottom line is I uninstalled IE8 and all is well again.

BTW: For those using Vista who do not know how/where to access uninstall options for updates; Go to [b:164sdmfv]Control Panel[/b:164sdmfv] and open up[b:164sdmfv] Programs and Features[/b:164sdmfv]. In the menu on the left hand side of the window you will see an option to [b:164sdmfv]View installed updates[/b:164sdmfv]. Click on that, then click on the relevant item and select [b:164sdmfv]Uninstall[/b:164sdmfv].

cheers now....JIM

I have to admit, I'm still using IE6.6. The reason is twofold: I almost never use IE (confirmed FF user), and IE7 seemed to be fraught with problems. I recognize there are improved security features in this new version, but there is one restriction I have trouble with. Uninstalling!

All but one of my primary machines run XP Pro SP3. If I install IE8 and then decide to go back to 6.6, It would work, afaict. However, If users haven't installed SP3 first, it's difficult to remove the browser if you install the service pack afterwards. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

MS has provided an uninstaller .msi to make removing the browser a simpler process. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

For now, I'm sticking with 6.6. When I finally make the move to Windows 7, It'll be time for the new version then (assuming it doesn't give user fits too!).

hey guys, im new to this forum, good to meet you all,

when i got my acer laptop 5535 series. windows vista 32 bit HP, with ~I.E 7, this was in January, around march time i thought id give IE~8 a go, nothing but trouble, browser seemed to go sooo slow and would close by itself at times, and yeah when i received a small avi file or wordpad file it would'nt let me open. so my advice to you ozbloke is nope, keep with 7 untill you hear of alot more people supplying positive feedback about this explorer. but hey, any new browser, server, program ETC you cant expect to get it and be completely bug free.

good to meet you guys.

cheers dode

Hey Dode - G'day mate and welcome to the forum...great to have you here.

I am actually using IE8 now and have been for a couple of months. I finally decided to open a support ticket through M$ and they helped me overcome that one issue. I haven't had any other problems. Although, as I said before, I predominantly use FF.

This simple solution is what fixed the email attachment issue for me: After installation of IE8 go to all available default settings (from within browser and via system) and set IE8 and Windows Mail as defaults. That's it.

After I got the emails attachments opening again OK, I just reverted back to FF as default and all well. Not quite sure why that should work, obviously something to do with associations though.

cheers....JIM
