A quick glance will reveal a couple of my posts outlining some problems which I've had in recent times and which are not all completely resolved. Not one to embrace rash judgements, I must ask the following question: - Is IE8 an improvement over IE7? Would one expect a better browsing experience with the newer version? Should I just download the fool thing and see for myself or just let well enough alone?
I'm expecting the usual information and edification from you gracious and learned folks.
Respectfully
Richard
Richard, at some time you WILL have to upgrade. Pretty simple, eh? Not really.
IE8 has some good improvements over IE7. Most notable are improvements in rendering speed and standards compliance, though there are many others.
Now, whether or not your problems were directly related to IE7, an upgrade to IE8 is a good choice (in my opinion). Because of the deep integration of IE in the OS installing IE8 will overwrite, update, and/or improve the resident IE files on your computer. Better protection from phishing, better security (hopefully), improved internet performance, and maybe an improvement in your IE7 issues (missing, corrupt, or unregistered files).
Basically, upgrading to IE8 is probably a good idea!
Of course, let's not forget that Firefox is an awesome, extremely customizable browser that can be used in place of IE.
Dave -
My many thanks for your prompt reply.
As you will recall, I am locked into HughesNet satellite internet service. Whether Hughes' system contributes to my tales of woe would be simply conjecture in the absence of evidence by other subscribers. Since, as you state, I'll be forced into using IE8 at some point then I may as well bite the bullet and install it now. I'll not forget Firefox as an alternative and may just give the two of them an A-B test and stay with the one which seems to suit my fancy.
Grateful and respectfully as always,
Richard
Hey Richard - I second Dave's recommendation for Firefox...it outstrips IE in terms of safety and versatility. There is a slight learning curve, bear with it....take a look through the add-ons and select some that you find useful....you will never go back!
I am plotting the same course as the Zigmeister....waiting for the inevitable patches and then shall install IE8 and have a little bo peep.
cheers....JIM

Unfortunately Satellite ISP's are the only choice for some. They are notorious for high latency, which may appear as slow response from websites, pages that won't load, and virtually makes any type of online gaming near impossible.
Thanks to one and all.
I have downloaded IE8 and things seem to have taken a turn for the better - not much - just better. As Dave points out, the Lord only knows how HughesNet affects one's browsing/internet experience.
Time to investigate Firefox. Don't know how I'm gonna do it since I've got fingers, toes and eyeballs crossed and can't see the screen or even type. I'll manage somehow.
Respectfully,
Richard
