Hi
I was so shocked at the price of Windows 8 I paid for it and downloaded it to my desktop.
I missed the option to make a ISO image of it. I did not recognize make a media copy as ISO.
Can anyone tell me if I can make a ISO copy from the files on my desktop and if so how.
Thank you in advance
Hugh
Hi Hugh - I'm pretty sure you cannot create an installation ISO image from an installed OS. Dave will probably know for sure.
Next best thing, maybe even more betterer, would be to create an image. You can use Macrium Reflect Free to create an image of the entire contents of your main (system) drive and keep that stored on an external drive.
Macrium Reflect Free includes the ability to create a bootable recovery disc. So, if ever your computer will not boot, or if you just would like to go back to to scratch and start over; you simply boot from the recovery disc and 'restore' the image you created and saved earlier. Viola, back to the beginning and a nice clean operating system.
Or: Installation ISO images are not product key specific, in other words you can use any Windows 8 ISO. If a friend or relative is planning on upgrading to Windows 8, just make a copy of their installation media and away you go.
Downloadable ISO images were eventually made available for Windows 7 but now that Microsoft has entered the direct sales to public game, I doubt that will be the case with Windows 8.

Thanks Jim for the reply.
I have decided what I will do is to buy and install a new hard drive in my pc. One for my XP system the other for the windows 8.
Can you advise me how to download the files from the desktop onto the second hard drive in a dual boot situation.
I am unsure what Raid system to put it into. If Raid 0 makes it just like having two partitions if you can confirm this I will do that.
Thanks

1. Have you attempted to re-run the Advisor that you downloaded for the upgrade and see if you can get to the part that allows you to create the install media?
2. Have you visited the Microsoft Store - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/buy - and redownloaded the Advisor and tried to get to the part that allows you to create the media?

Installing the Upgrade version of Windows on a clean partition or drive would invalidate the license key for the OS you're supposed to upgrade and technically be against the EULA licensing terms.

Raid 0 is a striped array involving 2, or more, drives which should be the same type, size, and speed. Ideally they should be the same exact drives. You will gain some speed, but the possibility of failure is greatly increased. Raid 0 will appear the the computer as one physical drive, but you can create as many partitions as you wish.
If it is speed that you're trying to gain by using Raid 0 I would highly suggest just getting an SSD.
Hi Dave
Thanks for the reply.
1 Yes I tried that and only get upload win8 now or load onto desktop to do later.
2 went to US site and tried put did not go through the payment side.
I think it is because they are selling the disk for $25.00, Perhaps the people who had
the chance to download to disk were downloading the trial version.
Is there no way I will be able to dual boot my XP and the Win8 keeping my files
and programme?
Thanks Hugh
Hi Hugh
I downloaded Windows 8 and installed it on my laptop as an upgrade over Windows 7. I downloaded onto my Desktop to do later. Once it is on your desktop it gives you options to install from Desktop icon or create a install DVD or an Install Flash Drive.
I created an install flash drive - just an 8GB flash drive stick. It also left Install Iocn on Desktop. I have tried the install from both Flash Drive and Desktop and both work. Once you install Windows 8 the Desktop install icon goes.
I would assume an new install would work in much the same way as it would more likely to be installed on a new PC rather than the one it is downloaded on.
To install a dual boot system you would need a new Windows 8 install and not an upgrade. I would also suggest that you install a new hard drive in your PC to put Windows 8 on. Windows 8 is also supposed to boot from a USB attached drive but I have not tried that yet.
