When starting acrobat reader I get an error "sensapi.dll is not a windows file or is damaged". Per instructions at Microsoft I ran sfc/scannow as administrator. checking log at the end it found errors but was unable to fix them. I had my win8.1 cd in the optical drive. I assume the file is on there somewhere. Next I searched thru my acronis backup for it and attempted to copy to the system32 folder. I got a permissions error. What must I do? Will a reinstall of Windows wipe out all my settings application registrations etc? Thats a last resort.

Hi Bob - Try running the DISM command Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth as per this article here: https://davescomputertips.com/sfc-fails-to-fix-errors-what-now/

Then restart the computer.

Get back to us if that doesn't work and we'll try something else.

Cheers... Jim

I tried the disn repair several times to no avail. The log file is mostly gibberish, but I think it cant find the source of the replacement file. I'm going to research this utility and see if I can figure out what it needs. When I ran the sfc utility I believe it was the same type of error. I really appreciate your help on this as it is way beyond my experience.

Hi bob99,

Everything is in the details. "disn" is not the same as "dism".
You may not mind the difference, but your computer won't like it at all.

Just FYI,
Richard

Hi Jim
Don't know if it matters but that file is named SensApi.dll in Windows 8 and 8.1 and in XP it is named sensapi.dll.

well I tried the sfc/scannow again. I found a command line on Microsoft site to capture the results in a text file. This time it repaired the sensapi.dll. It did fail to repair several others though. The initial symptom with acrobat reader is gone. I need to learn some more about this stuff. Thanks again.

PS I discovered this sfc also runs in win XP Pro. So I ran it there. now I have to find a log file to see if it accomplished anything. My old pc has a raft of windows errors. I hate to reinstall because I have a lot of stuff on it some of which wont install in win 8.1. primarily music stuff and things on floppy disks. Its not practical to upgrade it, so I'm stuck with keeping it around for now.
