Had a fire on Friday, June 14th. All was lost. Home gone.
In order for us to continue working from home, we immediately ordered new PC's. Mine is a Dell XPS8700 loaded with Windows 8.
Problem. My old machine had Vista as OS. Downloaded Google toolbar OK. Reason is this: - when I'm bouncing around between several sites, that drop-down history in Google toolbar is a blessing. Could revisit a site with a single click. Loved it. Cannot get Google toolbar to load onto my home page as before in this new Windows 8. Goes through the motions but Lord knows where it resides. Would really love to have this function again and for the reason stated above. Yes, I know - I can right-click the top of the current page and several pages that I've been to will be shown. It's still not like that long list that one finds with the Google toolbar. Any solution, anyone?

Hi Richard - I'm so sorry to hear your terrible news, that must have been devastating... I can't even imagine.
First up, make sure the Google Toolbar is enabled:
-
1) With Internet Explorer running press the Alt + T keys and select Manage add-ons from the menu.
2) Make sure Toolbars and Extensions is selected from the left hand panel.
3) Search down the list and see if "Google Toolbar" and "Google Toolbar Helper" are listed.
4) If they are indeed listed but the status shows as "Disabled"; highlight those items (one at a time) and click the "Enable" button displayed at bottom right of the window.
If those items are not listed in add-ons it means the Toolbar is not installed properly; here is some instructions you can try: https://support.google.com/toolbar/answer/9138?hl=en

Still answering to "Ozbloke"?
Try as I might, I was unable to get the Alt+T keys to work. Explain, if there's something that I might have done wrong. Tried all combinations. Looked elsewhere and could not find "Toolbars and Extensions". Windows 8 is strange! Vista, in spite of its shortcomings, was much simpler.
In my rummaging, I did find - under "programs" - "Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer". It would appear that it did download properly but that something else is amiss. Could I lean on you to persue this a bit further?

Yep, still answering to Ozbloke... among other things. 
Are we talking Windows 8 'desktop' here Richard? Windows 8 includes two versions of Internet Explorer; the full version which is accessible via the desktop and a cut down (mobile) version which is accessible from within the Modern UI (formerly known as "Metro"). The keyboard shortcuts I gave you will not work in the latter (mobile) version, and the Google Toolbar probably won't either. You will need to go to the desktop and access Internet Explorer from there.
By way of explanation:
Windows 8 is a different animal to all previous versions of Windows because it includes two environments; 1) a Desktop environment for full computing operations... and 2) a Mobile environment for mobile computing. The desktop environment provides for full programs to run as per normal, the Mobile version will only run "apps", which are pretty much cut down versions of full programs. For a full computing experience you will need to operate from within the desktop.
Internet Explorer 10 full version is only available via the desktop and Microsoft has now hidden the usual menu items which used to display across the top of the browser: File, Edit, View, Favorites, Tools, Help. In order to display those menu items in IE 10, the user must press the Alt key. Pressing the Alt + T keys takes you directly to the "Tools" menu.
