How would I go about migrating the software from the XP Pro PC 32 bit to the Win7 64 bit machine?

Thanks,

David

Hey David - Sorry to say, it can't be done mate!!

You cannot upgrade from XP to Windows 7 [i:1hdvozu4]and[/i:1hdvozu4] retain programs and settings. You can still use a Windows 7 'upgrade' disc but it has to be a fresh install, after which you will need to re-install all you favourite programs again and re-configure everything.

Cheers mate.....Jim

Hi Jim:
Thanks for your help. That's a big job.
I'm not sure I made myself clear regarding the question. I'm planning on getting a new PC with Win7 64 bit. Couldn't I use something like PC MOVER to move all the software to the new PC? Have you ever heard of ZINSTALL?

Cheers mate.....David

Hey David,

Zinstall XP7 does [b:26sveuf2]not[/b:26sveuf2] integrate your XP programs/applications/games into Windows 7. It sets up an XP virtual machine which can then be accessed from within the Windows 7 environment and run as a separate entity. Virtualisation is far from perfect, results may vary depending on the extent of possible conflicts between the mix of older software and the new machine's more advanced hardware.

Extracts from review:
[quote:26sveuf2]There is nothing limited about the content of the virtual desktop, but it doesn't work flawlessly. This has a lot to do with the fact that XP is running in a VM, and ZInstall isn't able to make up for all of the downsides of virtualization.

I also experienced many crashes of explorer.exe (the shell behind Windows) when using the Control Panel in XP..........There is lots of potential for data loss and frustration for the uninitiated.[/quote:26sveuf2]
The full review (by someone who has actually used the Zinstaller XP7 software) can be read [url=http://www.daniweb.com/reviews/review299924.html:26sveuf2]HERE.[/url:26sveuf2]

PC Mover utilises a different approach and, according to the majority of reports, a mostly unsuccessful one:
