Hi Ren - Welcome to the forum!!

Did you install SP1 via Windows Update or did you download the stand-alone file and install from that??

Have you tried running the machine in Safe Mode?

Have you tried a 'Clean Startup'?

Did you mean "windows explorer" or should that have been "Internet Explorer"? [lots of people get them mixed up ]

There are quite a few reports of this issue across the net but, as is usual, no solutions. I installed SP1 on my Windows 7 64-bit system via Windows Update and have had no problems.

Cheers....Jim

thx for the reply,

I installed Sp1 from update.
I havent tried running in safe mode, ill load in safe mode when i go to bed leave the comp running and see if it crashes
not 100% sure what "clean start up" is. only program that loads when i start windows is Avast antivirus free version
I mean Windows explorer not internet explorer. coping files from my other comp though my LAN will make it crash within 2 min (I had too start copy then open a game in full screen quickly too get my music on this comp)

this is a fresh install of win 7 just put on 2 days ago. had win7/winXP duel boot on before but it was crammed with alot of useless stuff and everything works on win7 now. i like too do fresh install every year or two.
I rember when I first installed win7 it had the same freeze issue, but after a few weeks the problem just went away pretty much(few crashes still on firefox but very rare)
I'm hoping it will just go away again, but it sure would be nice too know what the exact issue is.

Hi Ren - Let us know how you get on running in Safe Mode.

A 'clean startup' just means starting up the computer with essential services only:

1) Click [b:11vsao77]Start[/b:11vsao77], type [b:11vsao77]msconfig[/b:11vsao77] into the search dialogue box and then click on 'msconfig' in the results. Or, click[b:11vsao77] Start[/b:11vsao77] then [b:11vsao77]Run[/b:11vsao77], type[b:11vsao77] msconfig[/b:11vsao77] into the Run dialogue box and then click [b:11vsao77]OK[/b:11vsao77].
2) In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click 'Selective Startup' (under the [b:11vsao77]General[/b:11vsao77] tab).
3) Click to clear the 'Load Startup' Items check box.
4) Click the[b:11vsao77] Services[/b:11vsao77] tab.
5) Click on the 'Hide All Microsoft Services' check box.
6) Click [b:11vsao77]Disable All[/b:11vsao77], and then click [b:11vsao77]OK[/b:11vsao77].
7) Restart the computer.

If the machine then runs okay you will know it is one of the non-Microsoft services that is causing the freezes. To identify which one it is, just re-enable each service until the issue is replicated.

Again, please let us know how you get on.

Cheers....Jim

I tried safe mode it ran fine all night no freeze no crash.
I tried the MSconfig turned off all non microsoft and it still freezes up.
I then reinstalled win7 again, after installed it crashed within 3 mins on desktop without downloading any updates or programs.
In safe mode I noticed it was in classic theme thought maybe the win7 theme was freezing it sumhow so in non safe mode i changed too classic theme and also went too system settings - advanced - performace - and unchecked everything. that seemed to do the trick. coppied my music back too the comp again no freeze internet and windows explored not freezing up. also viewing text docs made it freeze up, but working perfect now. I will change back to win7 theme and turn back on the things in the performce tab one by one and see if I can identy exactly what was causing the frezze later. for now I'm going too download and install all the games and programs I want while its not crashing.

Hey Ren - Thanks for keeping us up to date.....much appreciated.

What you now reporting it really weird, that all points to memory issues. Seeing you have 2GB RAM and a 512MB dedicated graphics card, that is difficult to fathom.

Can you please let us know what your[b:m40dz441] Pagefile[/b:m40dz441] settings are:

1) Go to[b:m40dz441] Start>Control Panel>System[/b:m40dz441] and click on [b:m40dz441]Advanced system settings[/b:m40dz441] [in the left navigation pane].
2) Under "Performance", click on the[b:m40dz441] Settings[/b:m40dz441] button.
3) Click on the[b:m40dz441] Advanced[/b:m40dz441] tab and let us know what it says under "Total paging file size for all drives".

Also under [b:m40dz441]Control Panel>System[/b:m40dz441], what value is being reported under "Installed memory (RAM)"?

Finally, have you installed the latest graphic card driver? Are there any errors associated with the graphic card in Device Manager?

Cheers....Jim

In total page file memory it says 2047 MB
in system says 2.00GB
I have latest video driver and there are no errors in device manager

Okay, thanks Ren. Well it's got me beat.

Only other thing I can thing of is a really severe memory leak but seeing how you are experiencing these issues almost immediately after a clean install and with minimal programs installed, that would seem highly unlikely.

The fact that the freezing did not occur when operating in Safe Mode would definitely suggest errant software. But again, with minimal installations after a clean install that would also seem unlikely.....very weird!!

Logically, it points to one of the drivers.

If you would like to take the trouble; go through Device Manager and check each driver to see if there is a newer driver available direct from the device manufacturer.

That's about all I can come up with.

Cheers....Jim

Best guess based on what I've seen would be the NIC or the Video Card.
Is there an onboard video in addition to the installed card? Try using the other display and not the video card.
Disable the NIC (through Device Manager) and see if your freezes continue.

In Safe mode the display driver uses generic drivers (well, everything does) so it could be a potential driver issue.
Safe mode also disables the network card - so it's possible networking is going wonky. Disabling that should indicate.

That's exactly where I was going to go with this, Ziggie. I would also look at chipset drivers.
