Greetings,

I installed a new Sony Vaio Notebook for a friend last night. Everything went fine. There were a lot of Windows Updates that were installed but it all seemed fine. Everything is working. There is one strange anomaly. I can't find a copy of Windows Internet Explorer on the machine. Nowhere. So I went to microsoft.com and download the RC of IE9, ran the install program and was asked to reboot. Afterward I was told via an error message that the install program couldn't complete because a new version of IE9 is already installed on the machine.

I couldn't find it. What's going on?

Thanks.

GL

Hey GL,

[quote:22mg0wy5]I installed a new Sony Vaio Notebook for a friend last night[/quote:22mg0wy5]
You mean you installed Win7 on the notebook from a genuine installation disc, yes?

Don't know why the error message would be referring to IE9; to the best of my knowledge IE9 is not part of Win7 nor has it been released for general consumption via Windows Updates yet.

The IE version you would normally get with Win7 is IE8, and that is an integral part of (is built-into) Win7.

Go to [b:22mg0wy5]Start>Control Panel>Programs and Features[/b:22mg0wy5]. From the left hand navigation pane click on "Turn Windows features on or off". Scroll down and locate "Internet Explorer 8". Is there a checkmark (tick) in the box next to Internet Explorer 8?

If not, then place a checkmark in the box (by clicking on it). If yes (the checkmark is already there) then I'm sorry but I have no further ideas.

Cheers.....Jim

Hi Jim and thanks for your reply. I actually did go to the Windows Features pane but there was nothing there for any version of explorer. Yes, it was an OEM copy that came with the Sony Vaio I installed. Or I might better say the copy was pre-installed. The RC is in fact on the machine. I assume it came down via Windows Update. I'm in Switzerland. Maybe we get priority It's a bit strange. I did a search for Internet Explorer but nothing turned up. That was when I wrote my message and gave up for the day. This morning I went back and dug around in the Programs directory and found it there as an .exe file. It started the RC immediately. I just manually nailed it to the task bar and glued a link to the programs menu. All set.

Best to you.

Hey GL,

That could explain it then. I seem to remember reading somewhere that Internet Explorer 8 was not going to be included in versions of Windows 7 shipped to Europe.

Anyway, real glad to hear you found it and have got it up and running.....well done!!!

All the best,
Jim

I'm late to the game, but don't forget the search function in Win7! Simply typing "internet explorer" in the Start menu would have probably brought it up and made pinning the the Start menu/Task bar pretty easy.

Hi Dave

That was the first thing I did. No result. I have no idea why.

Hi, I have been trying for 3 hours now to simply install Internet Explorer 9 - aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh!!!

I have Windows 7, Internet Explorer tells me I have installed it but I have no icon to click and its not in my All Programs list either. I have searched - no joy. I did what you said to the guy previously - went to control panel - programs - turn windows features on and off, it does show internet explorer 9 there and it is on but thats it!

Help!!! All I wan to do is see if my on line course will load better using IE9 rather than Google Chrome. Simple I would have thought??!!
