Windows Defender Keep Shutting Off

Just updated Win7Home to Win10Home. Anniversary Update has not been installed. Every time I check on Defender status, system indicates app is OFF. All the buttons are greyed out when I access Update&Secuirty from Settings.

Defender supposedly supersedes Security Essentials that was part of Win7 and 8. Checking Uninstall on Control Panel shows no indication of Security Essentials.
I have Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D installed which both worked fine with Security Essentials.

What is causing Defender to shut OFF and apparently only stay ON briefly when system turns it ON?

Spybot Search and Destroy is the culprit: https://www.safer-networking.org/faq/spybot-defender-windows-10/

Try the suggested fix from the link above or simply uninstall Spybot.

Thanks, Jim. Read the link as well as the associated "How to disable (SpyBot) live protection".

Have no problem doing both steps but wondered if just disabling live protection would be enough?

It possibly could be but, if live protection is disabled, there would be little point in keeping it.

Thought it might be worth having installed to run manually with Defender being Live Protection. Must be a reason why SpyBot does not recommend just Uninstalling?!

Well, naturally Spybot doesn't want people uninstalling their product so that would be the last thing they'd recommend.

Honestly, in this day and age, Spybot is a pretty second rate on-demand scanner, better to go with something like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free).

On most of my machines I have Defender as my main AV, Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit installed as a second line of defense, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free) as my back up scanner.

Very true, Jim!

I had been using MS Security Essentials as primary fulltime AV protection, also running Anti-Exploit and then using Malwarebytes and Spybot for weekly manual checkups.

Based on your recommendation and personal use experience, which you certainly have more of than I, I am going to uninstall Spybot.

I am sure I will read about any future latest&greatest in DCT to which I subscribe and have contributed!

Keep up the great work!

Thanks.

I sent an inquiry to SpyBot on the chance that they might respond. Here is what I got from Team Spybot...

The security Center Service tells Windows that Spybot is the active AV program so this must be diabled if you want Windows Defender to run.

Spybots Live Protection also needs to be disabled as this will conflict with Windows Defenders real time scanning. This is the main reaosn why Windows put in place these new guidelines as it can be damaging to your PC if 2 forms of real time protection are running at the same time.

You can still use Spybot and all of its other features.

Will leave SpyBot uninstalled for now but will at least know for future that there is way for them to play nice!
