My brother just upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and many of his personal files are missing.
He had most backed up to Google Drive, but many have simply disappeared. In fact, the documents folder is empty.
Also, he had to input his account details into Outlook 2007 immediately after the upgrade (he chose the save all my settings option) and had to import the .pst file for all his emails. Before he did that I told him to copy all his .pst folders just in case,which he did to the desktop and even that disappeared.
I'm currently helping him through Team Viewer just to make sense of it.
This appears to have occurred after a Windows update very soon after the upgrade itself.
We've used system restore, but this didn't restore the missing files/folders.
I've also used search *.xxx to pin down some locations with nothing coming up relating to the missing files.
Yes, we've been there and found nothing.
It's not a complete disaster because, as I said earlier, he had most backed up to Google Drive and external storage and he's now put the matter to bed.
I think the point here is to backup your data before upgrading to Windows 10, as this is not an isolated case judging from several Google searches I did.

I remember, back in the days of Windows 8 beta testing, I wound up a Moderator on a Windows 8 forum (now defunct). We had warnings all over the place, to backup your existing OS before installing the Win-8 Beta version.
That was to protect the old OS and data when and if the Beta version would go South.
And, of course it did, all too often, and then the user would be on the forum crying that they lost all their data files.
Of course, there was absolutely Nothing we could do to help that person, and I personally tried to resist the temptation to just tell them "we told you to backup first".
If I didn't tell them, someone else would.
Heck, even at that time, Microsoft was telling people the same thing.
The entire instruction could have been condensed down to one little phrase....
"back it up, before you screw it up". Eh?
And here we are again......people getting a new OS from MS and that upgrade taking off down a dirt road and taking the persons data files with it.
For over six months, I tested all the new versions of Windows 10, but I never let it anywhere near my main HD or my data files. All my testing was done using downloaded ISO files and installed to a spare HD, connected up to my main PC.
I still have a copy of Windows 10 Pro/64 on a spare drive which I use for reference purposes only. When I hear about a new tweak or fix, I try it out on that drive.
Windows 10 is still too iffy for me to use as my daily OS, so I continue to use Windows 8.1/Pro.

PS: In reference to what Dave just said, one of my favorite saying is....."the only bad backup is the one you decided NOT to make".

What about "disappear", I heard, that in W10, in PowerPoint add new Templates like this, but deleted all old templates. Is it true? Just I need templates like in Office 2010, because I do a month orders, and they all must be in the same style. But company start updates a new Windows, could you tell me, if it's true, where I can download old templates. Thanks
