Problem with Updates

Hi folks
Thanks for your help in the past. Much appreciated. But here we go again.

When I try to update my system I get the folowing error message:

We couldn’t connect to the update service. We’ll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn’t work, make sure that you’re connected to the Internet.

Not sure how to solve this one. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Gerald,

Good to hear from from you again. Let's try a few simple things first:

1) Run the Windows Update troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security and click Troubleshoot in the left hand panel. Then run the troubleshooter.
2) Make sure your time and date settings are correct. Check the time and date setting in the System tray (aka the Notification area of the Taskbar). Or check the time and date settings by going to Settings > Time & Language. If the time and date settings are incorrect it probably means the CMOS battery is flat and you'll need to replace it with a new one. In the meantime, manually change the time and date so they are correct and then try updating again.
3) Make sure the Windows Update service is running. Open the Start menu and type "services" (minus the quotation marks), then click Services in the results. Scroll down the list of services and locate the Windows Update service. Make sure the Windows Update service shows as Running. If not, double-click Windows Update and click the Start button to start the service. Also make sure the service Startup type is set to Automatic.
4) If still getting the same message. Go to C > Windows > Software Distribution > Download and delete the entire contents of the Download folder.

If none of that works for you here are a few questions:

1) What antivirus are you using? Have you changed antivirus software recently?
2) Have you installed any other sort of security software recently?
3) Have you ever installed any 3rd-party software that blocks updates or manages updates?

Also, please open an elevated Command prompt (admin), type in sfc /scannow (note the space between the sfc and forward slash), and hit Enter. Let us know what message you receive on completion of the scan.
