Anniversary Update Won't Install

I am at my wits' end with this one.

Tried installing via Windows Update and also via the downloaded executable... same result. Everything goes well up until the second restart and then the start screen just hangs with the little circle twiddling around indefinitely - up to 5 hours - and no hard drive activity whatsoever.

30% - automatic restart, all good.
75% - 2nd automatic restart, hangs indefinitely.

The only USB devices connected are my keyboard and mouse. I've tried disabling all security based software - disabled at startup plus set all associated services to disabled. No difference.

Tried installing via Windows Updates in Safe Mode but am unable to access the Update and Security setting when in Safe Mode - apparently this is quite common.

Tried installing via downloaded executable while in Safe Mode, failed again but at least I received an error code: 0xc1900200. As usual, the error code is generic with no specific cause attached.

However, as a result of researching this error code I followed a suggestion posted by a number of users to increase the size of the System Reserved parition. Increased the System Reserved partition from 350MB to 500MB... made no difference, install still fails.

No apparent issues with drivers, Device Manager shows all good.

It will eventually revert back to my original build, after pressing the reset button several times, but running sfc /scannow tells me files are corrupted. Fortunately, the System File Checker also has no problem repairing same.

Been at it for 3 days and now numbering 6 attempts... no idea where to go from here.

Any ideas guys?

UPDATE - Sept 24th

Two more attempts:

1) Downloaded the full Windows 10 1607 ISO (which includes the Anniversay Update) and tried an upgrade install - installation froze at exactly the same place, after the second restart.

2) Disconnected the second internal HDD and tried again in Clean Boot mode - made no difference, still froze after the second reboot.

I am a glutton for punishment. 🙁

Have you tried disconnecting the ethernet cable and installing offline?

No, I haven't tried that Daniel. What makes you think that might make a difference mate?

If I remember correctly, the Anniversary update would not install on one of my PC's. So after downloading the files I disconnected the ethernet cable, did a restart and restarted the upgrade from the setup files. I really think I could have just connected my modem to the PC and bypassed the router and it would have worked also. You might also try running the W10 upgrade advisory tool. Good luck.

I appreciate the thought Daniel, thanks, I might give it a try later. To be honest, I'm fed up with the whole thing. Needing to download again every time I try something new is really eating into my monthly download quota. Plus, all the failed installs and recoveries over and over again played havoc with my system, to the point where I needed to restore an image.

When I install using the downloaded executable, the upgrade assistant runs and the first thing it does is present a report on compatibility and possible issues... all green ticks. This machine is less than 12 months old running all modern hardware, there shouldn't be any problems at all. Famous last words. 🙂

I agree this whole Anniversary update has been screwed up. I had some of the same problems you are having and if I restarted setup it would want to download the Anniversary files again and the files were already on C drive. So I went offline and setup used the files that were already on C drive. If you have the Anniversary ISO and a CD or a USB stick then you could boot offline with either one. Of course I know this is something you already know, just trying to be a help. Hang in their my Friend. Daniel.

Thought I would let you know that I just updated a W10 PC to Version 1607 that wasn't even connected to the internet. I downloaded the W10 Anniversary ISO 1607 and burned ISO to a DVD. Took less than an hour to install the Anniversary update but took over 3 hours to download the ISO. I did have to use my last password to sign in to W10 after the update.

I'd already tried that Daniel, upgrading from ISO burned to DVD, same result.

So, last night, just before going to bed, I tried your suggestion of installing while disconnected from the internet. Got up this morning, some 6.5 hours later to find the Start screen with the little circle thingee still merrily twiddling around.

It won't install in Clean Boot mode which pretty much rules out software incompatibility. There are no apparent driver issues. I'm starting to think this might have something to do with EUFI/BIOS - although what, I have absolutely no idea.

Your PC is a lot newer than mine and I am pretty sure I have mine set to bios boot.
I don't suppose you have an option in your bios to switch off the secure boot option.
Out of curiosity what kind of PC are you running?

It's a custom built machine - Gigabyte B85M-HD3 mobo, i5 CPU, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 740 (2GB) GPU, Samsung 850 EVO 240GB SSD + 1TB HDD.

It's dual UEFI/BIOS and yes, secure boot is turned off.

As I continue to receive notifications from this post that I am not subscribed to, I thought I might add my two cents of what I am going thru with the anniversary update.

I have had no problem downloading and installing the update, however, it BRICKS my computer.

Does not take very long for it to download and install (solid state hard drives) on last turn off and back on it boots and I hear the welcome windows audio, however there is NO VIDEO ON SCREEN only backlight lit.

Microsoft replaces my video driver with one that is not compatible with my computer.

The keyboard shortcuts to shutdown or restart changed from 1511 to 1607.

I was able to figure out how to launch msconfig using keyboard shortcuts and set boot to safe-mode.

This is what I had to do:

1. Hold window key down

2. Tap R key release window key

3. Type in msconfig

4. Tap enter key

5. Hold down Ctrl key

6. Tap Tab key then release Ctrl key

7. Tap tab key 2 times.

8. Tap spacebar key

9. Tap A key

10. Tap Enter key

11. Tap R key

The last step never worked however after unplugging and turning back on it boots to safe mode.

I was able to figure this out using an old laptop that has had about 35 versions of windows 10 insiders editions.

My computer that I am having this problem with is a HP Z1 workstation. It is extremely powerful and very fast.

Anyhow, in safe-mode I open the device manager and uninstall the driver that Microsoft thinks works with my computer.

I downloaded the only video driver that HP offers on their website for my unit running Win-10 with my laptop and install it during safe-mode.(very hard)

After turning safe-mode off in msconfig I reboot and same thing, BRICKED.

Tried to boot from newly created and tested repair disk, no good does not work now.

A few times got BSOD with WDF_VIOLATION (driver issues)

Went thru this a couple of times and gave up and reverted to 1511.(very hard as system restore gets turned off and restore points disappear, was able to get back up with data backup)

I called Microsoft (Singapore) and was told they are aware of this problem and it should be fixed in a month.

Seemed like I was talking to a CSR from Verizon that lies and tells you they are working on it and will let me know when its fixed.

He even took my phone number and email address, however I am not holding my breath.

So to all trying to get this anniversary update be careful what you wish for.

And now when I get notifications from this post I won't mind, as I am now a contributing member.

Hello fellow sufferer.

This Anniversary Update situation is a complete fiasco. During the course of looking for a solution I came across literally hundreds of users reporting similar issues, and they are just the ones who have posted on forums, goodness knows how many others there are.

Mr Jim, after seeing your PC specs, I can see our two PC's are not that far apart except for mobo manufacture, yours is Gigabyte and mine is Asus.
You think it might be the UEFI boot, I would be more inclined to reset the Software Distribution folder and check for any pending updates for your W10 version, and I am sure you already have reset this.
If this is the only OS on this drive, I think I might be inclined to do a reformat and start over. I know I have had to reformat hard drives when Windows goes astray. Hoping you get things straighten out with your PC. Daniel.

I honestly have no idea Daniel. I can't see anything obvious in the UEFI/BIOS settings which might cause the problem. Plus, Windows 10 has been booting fine for almost 12 months so I can see no reason why the Anniversary Update should suddenly be any different.

One of the first things I did was to reset the Software Distribution folder. I've also reset the folder between attempts.

You are not alone when dealing with the Anniversary update, in fact you may be one of the lucky ones that the update hasn't installed.
I have always believed in keeping Windows updated but having to deal with Microsoft's update policy is getting ridiculous. Always like to read some of Woody's comments.
