Hello altogether,

I' ve got a question regarding Lubuntu 16.04.

I have installed Lubuntu 16.04 LTS, 64bit on a USB-stick. There is a great instruction for doing so provided by "easylinux.de"
( download of the Community-Edition: http://www.easylinux.de/CE/EasyLinux-CE-2016-02.pdf ) p. 43 ff. Yet I have to say the article is in German.

Anyhow I did a complete install of Lubuntu (not just a live-system with or without persistence) and after a few preliminary obstacles it worked just fine.
The bootloader is on the stick of course and my system boots from the stick.
I have to say that I' ve got just USB 2.0 but nevertheless reading- and writing-speed is great. I really cannot say that I perceive any noticeable lag whatsoever.

My question now is:
With the help of "Clonezilla" I should be able to make a system-backup of Lubuntu (so everything should be backed up: root-Partition, home-partition and of course the respective bootloader).
Would it be possible to transfer the such-created backup to an external USB-harddisk and to start my system from there?

Many thanks in advance for your help

Greetings
Rosika

Hi Rosika
I see no reason why one should not be able to "clone" Lubuntu to an extended partition setup on your external drive. Grub will more than likely have entries for your USB stick and the external drive. Never have tried this but would like to know how it turns out. The only thing I have ever backed up with Linux is the Home Folder. I ran Lubuntu awhile back on an older machine, seemed like a very good Distro. Good Luck!

Hi Daniel,

so nice to hear from you again. I hope you are fine and everything is alright.

Thanks for your answer.

I thought the transfer should be feasible but one never knows.
So before buying an external hard disk I should be making up my mind with respect to whether to purchase a 2.5 inch HDD without external power supply or an HDD with external power supply.
Could you give me some advice?

Thanks a lot.

Greetings
Rosika

I had to make the same choice the other day at Best Buy while shopping for an external HDD. I finally purchased a WD 3TB My Passport which powers from a USB port instead of a power supply, I have 3 PC's that I am storing backups on this drive for. If the external drive will be used in one location then one that uses a power supply should work fine, and they are a little cheaper.

Hi Daniel,

thanks for your advice.
I was a little bit uncertain as to whether there is a difference between using an external harddisk just once in while for backups and using it more or less permanently when running an operating system.

I think I´ll go for a harddisk with power supply.

Thanks again an have a nice weekend.
Greetings
Rosika
