I have been using two computers on one monitor for a few months. The splitter is Trendnet TK-209K. The monitor is an ASUS VS228. Suddenly upon booting my 32 bit PCLOS Linux there is a rectangle in the middle of the screen. (jpeg attached)

It also shows up when I use my 64 bit Windows 7 computer. So I unhooked all of the splitter and am now switching the cable to my monitor when I use each computer. I am also back to using two keyboards and 2 mouses.(can I say mouses or should I say mice)

Contacted ASUS and they started a support ticket and told me to unhook the splitter, so I did. I haven't been able to get back with them because of the weekend and their hours.

Anyway, while in PCLOS I looked that the display in the tools app and there was listed a gaggle of stuff that I don't know how to get rid of or if it would solve my problem if I did. Listed in the display is: DP1, DP2, DP3, HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, VGA1, and Virtual1. I made the VGA1 the default but couldn't find a way to get rid of all the other stuff.

Thanks,
Harold

It looks like one of your monitor buttons is stuck. Try a factory reset of the monitor settings from within the main menu, if no joy-- then unplugged it entirely & hold the power button in for 45 seconds.

On some monitors, once you get it sorted (hopefully) there's a way to "lock" the screen so it can't come back. Check online for your manual to see if yours can do this.

Good luck!

It seems that I can't access the menu at all with the buttons on the bottom of the screen. I will try holding the power button for 45 seconds.

I have been researching the internet and it seems that I am not the only one that has a problem with the menu buttons on LCD monitors, not just ASUS either. I will also check to see if I can "lock" the screen so it doesn't come back, if I can get it to go away.

Today when I turned on the computers the menu was popping up and flashing off and on. I was not able to access it with the monitor buttons. If I turned off the monitor with the button on the monitor, and waited a minute or two, when I turned it back on with the same button, the display was clear but later it would start flashing the menu and sometimes go away. I have an old 14" monitor that I am using. I may just tear into the flatscreen and see about those button on the bottom of it. I may just have to get a new monitor for Christmas.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Harold

Sounds to me like one of the micro switches is stuck or broken.

Sorry so late getting back to this. I opened up the monitor and didn't find anything outstanding to me and my limited knowledge. Put it back together and nothing was changed. I fixed it by buying a new monitor.

Thanks,
Harold

That's a pretty radical fix Harold. LOL

Definitely sounded like a broken micro switch so, in the end, you did the right thing.

Main thing is, you now have a working monitor again.

Replacing the monitor sounds good to me.
