This topic is in response to [url=http://davescomputertips.com/newsletters/2011/august.php#article7:254fmuql]Jim's last Newsletter article[/url:254fmuql] where he asks whether you turn your computers off, leave them on, or use sleep/hibernate.
I, myself, have all the computers at DCT setup to use sleep mode (except servers). When I transport a laptop I manually place it is sleep mode unless it's going to be off for a while, such as an airline flight, then I use hibernate.
That said, there are many people who leave their computers on all the time and there are others who turn it off when not in use. Which category do you fall in and why?
I've been a fond believer in using UPS which is set to power down when the need arises (as well as protect). Monitors go blank, then power down, but computers, modem, router stay on almost all the time, unless I'm not going to use one of them for some time.
As for power consumption, todays units do run hotter, but actually draw less, and these facts I receive from my UPS. From my years of using computers (over 20 plus), I can say that the shock of the ON / OFF state is more to blame than keeping it ON. I'll add that I still use some 486 computers (DOS based), and they are still in perfect working order.
So yes, unless you're not going to use the computer within say a day or two, you might consider turning it OFF. Mindblower!
