Windows 10?

Does anyone know (have insight) as to what's happening over at Microsoft? Seems version 10 is in the works, coming out late 2015. Does this mean 9 with be terminated and no chance to enter the market.

And I heard that 10 will re-introduce that famous START Menu (from the old days which 8 and 8.1 removed). And (wait for it - drumroll please), 10 is going to be a FREE upgrade. Sorry, but this sounds too good to be true.

Comments please, Mindblower!

Hi Mindblower,

I installed Windows 10 Technical Preview today in a virtual machine (VirtualBox).

It does indeed have a Start Menu but it is a combination of the "old" Start Menu and the "new" Start Screen. I like it.
Windows 9 will be skipped entirely. There are jokes floating around the Internet that MS is trying to create distance from Win 8

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for owners of Windows 8.x.

Update: I was so sure I'd heard official reports of the free upgrade, and now, I can't find a single one. Jim is right when he says they are still just rumors. I stand corrected ~ Richard

From what I've seen so far, Windows 10 is an exciting upgrade and hopefully be enough to quash the hatred that Windows 8 garnered.

It's been fun playing with this Win 10 preview, and aside from the new Start Menu, everything will be familiar to a Window 8 or Windows 7 user.

These are great times,
Richard

Hi MB - Great response from Richard who has covered everything nicely, as usual.

Just one thing; As far as I am aware, there has been no official confirmation as yet that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for existing Win 8/8.1 users. To date, Microsoft has made no announcement to that effect, in fact nothing re the pricing structure at all. So, even though there's plenty of speculation suggesting that Windows 10 will be free for Windows 8/8.1 users, at the moment it's just that, speculation.

Cheers... Jim

Hi Jim and Richard,

I seem to remember previous rumours of free updates to new Win OS releases, none of them come to fruition.
The MS video (https://davescomputertips.com/why-microsoft-skipped-windows-9-and-went-straight-to-10/) begs users to download the pre-release versions and assist in the development.  Do they reward these stalwarts with a free copy when it is finally released?  Do they "as hell as like".

No flying pigs forecast!

Installed the Windows 10 WTP yesterday. Windows 10 does indeed bring back the start button and no charm bars popping out. If you left click on the start windows it brings up the start menu and if you right click it brings up the x menu. I am using the WTP right now and all in all I think it is an improvement for "desktop computers". It remains to be seen if it will justify the cost of upgrading from 8.1. Daniel.

I like it, but I'm still trying to figure out what Ten offers over Seven, apart from agility.

Except for a faster boot up time and no charm bar it really doesn't offer any more functionality than windows 7. The trade off with 8.1 is a corner of the monitor compared to a whole monitor screen filled with a start menu. I do believe that windows 7, especially the 32bit, had more compatibility with older software. Daniel.

Anyone know know if it updates itself?
I've only seen one update so far and will carry on using it until it expires, mainly due to the speed.

I was having some dual boot issues with 8.1 so I finally uninstalled it from my main machine. Will have to drag out one of my old test machines and try windows 10 on it.Daniel

Finally got the WTP on a dual boot with XP. Had to delete a boot entry for windows 7 but it is booting and running well with XP. Marc, what do you mean by if it updates itself? I have a total of six updates and two of them are related to WTP (KB3000061 and KB3001512. I usually do a manual update through the action center. I really like the speed and the boot time compared to windows 7, even on this older machine. The only way I see of software compatibility is with a dual boot with another version of windows, or until software is updated. I don't see a very compelling reason to move from windows 8.1, unless their is a real good offer from MS. Daniel.

I think MS would be yanking our chains to expect people to fork out money for Win 10 if it didn't offer a significant benefit over 8.1 which I've learned to live with, just about.

I think your phrase "significant benefit" may be the key. Like you I have learned to live and use 8.1 very easily. By the way, where all the windows 8 haters? Are we the only two on DCT that is trying the WTP? Daniel.

Yea right! For me a cup of coffee. Just got through installing my first WTP October update. I posted a feedback for WTP for what it is worth. I have no issues with windows 10 as an OS itself, but I do have issues with the whole windows 8 scenario when it comes to the installation of the OS on a desktop computer. Daniel.

Why temp fate and try an unstable os, unless you enjoy testing? As I discovered recently, an os, is just that. How it loops and feels are things you can alter (to within reason) and why my 8.1 behaves like a finely tuned XP, Mindblower!
