OK...

Finally got around to giving this a try. My results were very mixed.

PDF to Word: I tried a book chapter with illustrations - about 40 pages. The result had the right 1/4 of the title page cut off. and the rest of the document was poorly formatted and endlessly laid one line on top of another. This may be partially the result of Office 2010 having to convert the .doc file to make it viewable, but I doubt it.

The same PDF converted to text well enough, but the table of contents was a mess.

The same PDF converted individual pages as images (.jpg and .png) without serious difficulty. Still, it's a clunky solution, IMO.

A document without images/illustrations converted to PDF without problems.

Since one of the primary uses of this software is converting PDF to Word, I'm not convinced that this is the right software to use except for creating PDFs from documents that don't contain images - quite a limitation. AnyBizSoft did a fine job with the first PDF consisting of both and didn't take quite as much time. For myself, I'm sticking with Nuance.

Thanks Ron.....much appreciated.

I always thought Nuance sounded like a very good software, even though I haven't actually tried it. The fact that you like it only serves to re-enforce that opinion.

Cheers mate....Jim

I've been using their PDF Converter Pro 5 for a long time, but had to buy an upgrade to v.7 when I built that box with Win 7 Pro on it. (5 still works fine on my XP machines). The professional version allows you to create, convert, and edit PDFs - very useful, IMO. They also provide a free Reader http://nuancepdf.com/PDFReader.....nload.aspx, but I've been using PDF-XChange for over a year from Tracker and it suits me fine.

Mate, all I ever do is read/view PDF docs. I've never really had any need to go any further.

If ever I need to fill in a PDF doc and return it to the sender; I just print it out, write in all the necessary info, scan the completed form and save it to PDF format back on the hard drive. From there, I just email it as an attachment. Seems a tad long winded but then it would only happen once in a blue moon and certainly not often enough to warrant special software.

So tell me Ron, what sorts of things do you do with PDF's which require those extra abilities/features??

I'm really interested to know.

Cheers mate.....Jim

Over the years, I've written and accumulated many, many papers in the field of geology. PDFs are easier to share with colleagues, due to its ability to be read by different OS with the proper software. Originally, Adobe Acrobat (not reader) was my creation software of choice, but it got larger and too complex for my taste over time. Nuance PDF Pro 4 was what I eventually chose to replace Acrobat. Upgrading to 5 was done after that version had wrung out its initial bugs.

Additionally, I have a large library of books and publications devoted to the field. I decided some years ago to donate them to a local college, but not before scanning the pages to PDF. This was pretty slow until external drives got large enough and cheap enough to facilitate the process. Now I can cart off 10-15 books every so often to an appreciative library staff while retaining the information they contain. (WD just came out with a 3 TB external drive - clouded my mind!)

Anyway, that's the reason I use the software. I just find Nuance to be the easiest and most reliable so far.

When I last tried out PDFTiger, about a year ago, I got the same results with Ron with the "PDF to Word" feature: lines cut off, text lines placed over others, messed up formats, you name it. Also, it wasn't able to handle convertions of PDFs containing non-standard latin characters, the outcome was simply a pile of unreadable characters.
Though I don't know how much is was updated/ fixed over the last year, I see that it hasn't improved.

IMHO, the most important part of this type of PDF convertion tools is the "PDF to XXX" feature and not the "XXX to PDF", for that you can get a lot of (free) virtual printers that do the job without problems.

So, I can't help but wonder how did they decide on the price-tag and how many do shell out that cash.
Then again, PDFTiger ads put more weight on the latter than the former, so maybe I'm missing or misunderstanding something?

I forgot to mention that I created a PDF from one of the HDR articles written for the DCT newsletter. While accurate enough, I agree with FD that a virtual printer would have worked as well - PDF Creator comes to mind. Personally, I think this is very over-priced considering its faults. If I'd bought it, I'd contact Customer Support for a refund!

I'm using this myself and am very pleased with it.
But as a PDF-XChange Viewer user also, I'm going to give the PDF-XChange Lite app a whirl, seems to have a couple more features than PDF Creator.

I don't see that promo here, maybe you should it put up while it still lasts.

Will do FD....don't remember now why I chose not to in the first place. Must have had a good reason at the time, just can't remember what the heck it was.

Oh well...................
