Microsoft to release free Anti Virus!

Hi Guys and Gals - Microsoft has announced plans to release a new free anti virus program. Code-named 'Morro', the new offering will be available in the second half of 2009 and will protect against viruses, spyware, rootkits, and Trojans. In conjunction with the release and perhaps not surprisingly, Microsoft will be discontinuing its poorly received commercial anti virus 'Live OneCare'.
Is it mere coincidence this move is to take place just prior to the anticipated release of the new operating system, Windows 7?...I think not! Will the publishers of existing free anti virus software be quaking in their boots?....again, I don't think so!
I wonder if Morro will end up being an integral part of Windows 7 in much the same way Defender is in Vista?
As Sergeant Schultz would say.........very interesting!

cheers all.......JIM

The only short term benefit I see from this is people will be offered [i:2gwrcc2s]something[/i:2gwrcc2s] free to prevent infection. I'm not a fan of Microsoft offering any security product (free or otherwise). I've spoken about this before in the newsletter - It's like letting the fox guard the hen house - not a good idea.

Of course, any protection is better than no protection!

The long term benefit is those who were willing to pay for a security product from Microsoft will hopefully move to a better third party product like ESET, Avast, etc)

... I agree, it's the ultimate irony....Microsoft offering security software to guard against attacks on the vulnerabilities in the Operating Systems they produced in the first place. If we use Live OneCare's dismal success rate as the benchmark.....no way!!
