Disappearing add-on icons in Firefox

Hey Everyone, just gone through this really weird issue with FF and wondering if anyone else has experienced the same or heard of this happening - running FF7 in Windows 7:

I have only a few add-ons and they all involve an icon which is positioned at the top of the browser across the navigation bar. First one I noticed had mysteriously disappeared was the 'Brief' add-on, which is a feed reader. Later on I realized that the icon for the 'Video DownloadHelper' add-on was also missing. Next day I noticed that my 'WOT' add-on icon was not there. Then, a couple of days ago I installed an add-on called 'Turn Off the Lights' which I was testing out for an article. Everything was fine, icon and all - then I went to complete the article this morning and blow me down if that icon hadn't disappeared too. Only other add-on I have installed is 'LinkExtend' which has its own toolbar, so that was fine.

What I tried: Removing and re-installing each add-on. Disabling all add-ons and then re-enabling each, one at a time. Reverting to the default theme (had been using an installed theme). None of that made a blind bit of difference. Next, I Googled the problem to see if there were any solutions online - quite a few reports of similar issues but zero solutions.

In the end, in order to overcome this, I had to set up a new profile in FF and start from scratch - that's a right PITA I can tell you. Anyway, that seems to have fixed it, for the moment at least.

Been using FF for many years, never experienced anything even remotely like this before. Anyone have any ideas why and/or how this might happen?

Thanks...(3 dots) Jim

I'm sorry Jim, I am not sure why that would be happening. I had a similar issue with an addon called custom buttons, but that was an issue of the version number not being high enough for the firefox version I was using.

Glad I could be of no help to you

Yep, and that's getting a lot more common with Mozilla's 'rapid release' policy. Incompatible add-on was the number one suspect but it turned out that was not the cause.

Anyway, I thank you for responding...much appreciated. At least you did make me laugh.

Cheers...Jim

Jim, I believe this is a Firefox problem. One of the main reasons I'm still using version 3.6
I read that there were (are) some quirks with the new releases, but disappearing icons is new to me. Wish you luck, Mindblower!

Thanks MB. Yes, I read similar reports.

To be honest, I hung on to v3 for that very reason but I finally got fed up with slow loading, etc so bit the bullet and upgraded. Not sorry I did though, FF7 is a tad quirky but it is also MUCH faster than the older version.

Cheers mate...Jim

I tested the improved speed using version 5.1 on one, and 3.6.x on another. Yes the loading was faster, but the number jumping to keep up with Chrome - to political, imho. Guess I'll be one of the last to leave, as I'm also clinging onto XP. If it ain't broke, don't mess with it, Mindblower!

I am hearing you MB, and I'm not generally a speed merchant myself. But I do spend a [i:28lm3c1u]lot [/i:28lm3c1u]of time surfing around a [i:28lm3c1u]lot[/i:28lm3c1u] of sites and FF3 was starting to dive me nuts - even nuttier than usual.
