Was using Avast Free and loved that. Then I started a home business and had to move to another product as no "commercial use" is allowed. I've been using MSE for nearly a year. I've had only good experience with it. No performance issues, no viruses. The only issue I have with it is that the interface is rudimentary. Microsoft has acknowledged that and will be upgrading it in the future.

One interesting point has just surfaced thanks to Green Lantern, and that's how one surfs the net. I'm talking about individuals, who use their computers for business. Unless they use the same for personal surfing, they would visit safe sites, and stick to the those that dealt with the business. Individuals generally go hog wild leaping all over, and are thus more likely to experience problems which might not be picked up by MSE. This is my 2 cents worth, Mindblower!

Hey MB - No matter what the environment, the level of security installed on a machine should always be dictated by personal habits. There is also a big difference between a little ol' lady who uses her machine primarily for email exchange and occasionally looking for a knitting pattern or recipe and a much younger person who is hooked into gaming, music, socialising, torrents, P2P and the like. I've stated many times that one of the best forms of security is the adoption of safe surfing practices but alas, not too many adhere.
The bottom line on MSE is; the vast majority of reputable experts in the field do recognise MSE as a major player in the free AV stakes. The well respected Fred Langa recently tested the software over an extended period on his own personal machine and wrote about the results (and the software) in glowing terms. User feedback has also been overwhelmingly favourable.
I am not saying MSE is [i:10gf2p60]the[/i:10gf2p60] very best available but, for many people, it is certainly worthy of consideration.

I have no quarrels with you on surfing habits Jim. It's just that I and some others have experienced problems with MSE. These problems are no different from problems others have experienced with other software companies (sorry for the excessive use of others). Might explain why there are so many security software companies.
What puzzles me is this rallying of the old guard (so to speak), defending MSE? We all have software we like, and software that's caused us problems. Lets move on like gentlemen, Mindblower!

Hey MB - Not so sure the "old guard" is rallying in defense of MSE mate. More, I think, just looking at a relatively new product, assessing same and giving an honest appraisal.
You are quite right of course, the diversity of opinions is what helps stimulate discussion and make life interesting. For example; (IMO) when it comes to free AV's, AVG Free is currently at the bottom of the pile and I would never choose it, yet it remains the most downloaded/popular solution. Not so among the more advanced users, who generally prefer either a commercial product or Avast Free or AntiVir Free, but certainly overall.......go figure!!

AVG is the most downloaded of AVs, also most uninstalled
