I find it takes longer, much longer to transfer data from a USB port to the hard disk, than from the hard disk to the USB port. Could someone shed light on this mystery, Mindblower!

Hi MB - That is simply because the transfer rate for an internal HDD is much faster than the USB 2 standard.

I ran a couple of benchmarks for you to see, using HD Tune. The first is the results for an internal HDD and the second for external USB drive. You will see the transfer rate for the internal drive is almost double that of the external drive connected via USB. The access time is also quicker for the internal drive:
