I am unable to access the internet. Win XP device manager shows ethernet controller with yellow mark, says driver not installed, Nvidia,(code 28)---- but under shows Realtek Fast Family ethernet NIC #2 installed. I don't know where to look for the necessary driver. Is it a Windows driver, a Nvidia driver, a motherboard driver or ?????. Help very much appreciated

Were you able to access the internet before? Did you do anything prior to this happening?

The reason I ask is it sounds like you have two NICs (ethernet cards) installed, so we need a little background information.

Thank You. Yes, I downloaded a Driver ???? program, allowed it to install some "updated" drivers. That caused a problem with accessing the internet. So I deleted (or uninstalled) the ethernet controller, thinking a reboot would reinstall it. But it didn't, I replaced the controller with another that was working, (no driver for it) and still not recognized. If I purchased a new controller would it have the necessary drivers? or---- ??
Thanks

OK, here is what I think is going on based on what you've said (let me know if this is correct please)...

OK, you have a NIC (ethernet controller) built into the computer(probably the Nvidia one) and tried to update the driver, which didn't work out so well.

You installed a new NIC(probably the Realtek one) into the computer hoping that Windows would find it, install drivers, and you would be back up and running, but that didn't work either.

I'm betting when you tried to update the drivers they may have been wrong (or bad) causing the original NIC to stop working. If I read your reply correctly you used a program to determine that a driver update was needed and the program chose what driver to download.

The reason the NIC you added didn't work is probably due to a BIOS setting that tells the computer to use the NIC built onto the motherboard. Easily changed, but I would try to return things to the way they were before all this happened.

Can you tell us what computer make and model# you have?
If it is a computer you built please tell us what make and model# the motherboard is.

Yes, you are right
Thanks for the reply. My computer is home built, MB is Shuttle AN35-400,I have the MB disk, I have installed drivers, but install of ethernet controller fails, don't know why. I think the network adapter is a nVidia nForce MCP, I have downloaded driver files and installed, no luck, I have restored system to earliest date, nope, I have tried 2 different NIC cards, (always show as Realtek) but neither were, 1 no name, the other Belkin. The driver program that caused changes had a rollback feature, but that didn't work either. I've used all of my ideas, if you have another, help is appreciated.
Thanks

The NIC cards that report Realtek are showing the chip maker, not the manufacturer/seller of the card.

Here are the drivers for the motherboard - [url=http://download.shuttle.eu/Downloads/Mainboard/AN35-N-400/Driver/an35n%20ultra%20and%20an35n-400.zip:2qsh8wdk]Motherboard driver[/url:2qsh8wdk].

Remove all extra NICs from the computer. Go to device manager and remove (right click - uninstall) all other NICs except the original Nvidia. Extract the drivers to a folder on your desktop. Go back to device manager and right click on the Nvidia NIC and select Update driver.
In the Wizard that opens select No, not this time and Next.
In the next window select Install from a list or specific location (advanced) and Next.
In the next window select Dont search. I will choose the driver to install and Next.
In the next window click the Have Disk button and navigate to the folder you extracted the drivers to. There may be specific folders (win2000, XP, Vista) for each operating system. Be sure to point to the correct folder for your OS. Click OK and it should install the correct drivers for the NIC.

I downloaded the MB drivers, (I believe they are the same as the MB disk) followed your other suggestions, and the message after attempt to load ethernet driver was "cannot install this hardware". I've made several tries and always the same. I don't know if a reinstall of Win XP would pick it up or not. It seems the only next step------ if there is one. ?????
Dave, thanks for hanging in there with me on this problem. If by some stroke of luck I get some answer, I'll post it.

Just to make sure we're on the same page...

The drivers are located in AN35-Untra>mainbrd.zip>mainbrd>WinXP>Ethernet of the download.

Also, I know this is the motherboard info, but did this come as a barebones system? If so, what is the model number?

No I purchased the MB at Fry's, other components various places. I did upgrade the CPU a year ago.
A little strange item about this. I have 2 HD, 1 cloned, when this happened. The cloned was 6 weeks old and didn't include some important "stuff",so I didn't want to use it. Besides for some reason it had no audio and no copy and paste, but email and web worked, download but no send. And I think the ethernet controller was marked, yellow. But when I installed the second NIC card,it quit. I don't pretend to know computers very well, but it's a hobby for me. I'm ready to upgrade the MB and chip, but the transferring of programs etc. is ??? If I could just swap HD's and all would be OK, I'd go for that.
Thanks
Paul

One final thought about this problem. The install of the controller would not search for the driver, so I ran the set up for all drivers in Win XP. At the install of the ethernet controller driver it ask for the Win XP Pro disk. It searched for file idewinxpi386 on the disk and couldn't find it. I explored the disk, that file is not there. Then setup continued, and said all drivers are installed, reboot. No solutions to that I know of.
Thank
