My bluetooth range for my headphones just doesn't make it to the bathroom.
Every husband knows the problem, she who must be obeyed says ' I can't take any more of that drivel put on your headphones' being a good husband this is done.
The problem is that my bluetooth range extends to the door of the bathroom and then cuts out. This has another effect as well as the speakers cut in and scare the Hell out of herself.
That's the problem. I have searched for a range extender for bluetooth and even gone as far as looking into Mesh systems but the only mention of bluetooth seems to refer to setting up with smartphones.
Wifi (to me) is a different system and my headphones are bluetooth not wifi - I have considered buying wifi headphones if such exist and using a Mesh system but can't seem to get accurate info.
The problem is compounded by the fact that the home is built on a concrete raft which is actually iron slag from the steelworks with a cement solution poured over it which seems to reduce the range of everything..
I have bought a couple of bluetooth dongle thingies that promise long range and have marvellous write ups on Amazon but they are no better than the cheapie supplied with the computer.
I did try using a usb extension with a bluetooth dongle on the end but that was just as bad as the same dongle plugged in to the computer.
My location is Wales UK so references to USA and AU sites for buying are difficult as many do not supply overseas of use shipping that is extortionate - I do buy regularly from AliExpress and Banggood.
That's the question and all the info I can think of. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Jon, and welcome to the DCT Forum.
Normal Bluetooth range is maximum 30 feet and that can be reduced quite considerably if there are walls between the speaker/headphones and transmission device. I am not aware of anything that will extend Bluetooth signals.
As you rightly point out, Bluetooth and wifi are completely different systems used for completely different purposes. Bluetooth is for transmitting audio signals, not wifi.
The only answer I can think of is to have the transmission device - TV, gaming console, smartphone, whatever - closer to the speakers/headphone, within that 30 foot range.
What type of device are you transmitting to your headphones from?
Sorry I can't be of more help.
Cheers... Jim
Thanks Jim,
The transmitter is my PC and it's in the only place it will go. And I can't move the bathroom (I would if I could LOL). The range is only about 15ft but has walls in between - I get a good 30 in the front garden (through the window).
Range is greatly reduced due to the slag raft and solid brick dividing walls (black mortar and engineering brick seconds). It's only in recent years that wifi and bluetooth have stabilised as far as we have now. We also have a mobile phone transmitter about 50 yards away.
Thanks for confirming my thoughts on mesh and wifi extenders not doing the job. At least I won't waste any more money.
Looks like I'll have to wait for some company to notice the gap in the market.
Hey Jon,
Latest Bluetooth versions (5+) claim a greater range but I haven't tested that. Of course, you are stuck with whatever version your PC and headphones support. You can buy Bluetooth range extenders that use the local wifi network to stream but, once again, I have no experience with how successful they are. They are not overly expensive though and, if your budget allows, maybe worth a try.

The article refers to US products but similar will be available in the UK.
