Many of you know, or have figured out, that I am a System Administrator for a small premedia company.
Well, it was small. About a month, maybe two, ago our small premedia company was bought by a large premedia company.
Two weeks ago we were told we must take 6 days off before the end of the year. Use vacation if you have it, otherwise take it unpaid.
Last week they said well...not unpaid, but use your vacation.
Today they announced 10% pay cuts to all staff (though I am certain that the executives are rolling around in cash right now). Supposedly these are temporary, but who knows.
So....anyone hiring a contractor who can telecommute only? Unfortunately, my situation does not allow me to move right now.
Any lawyers out there? Is this legal? This paycut puts me below what I was hired in at (I signed a contract/job offer thing and everything).

Hey Zig - Feel for you mate...that really sucks, big time! I wouldn't be relying on the 'temporary' nature of the changes either.
That could never happen here...we have special legislation in place and an ombudsman/overseer to protect the rights of employees and prevent unscrupulous employers from exploiting them. But, alas..that is here and a long way from where you are.
I can't believe there would not be something similar in place in your country, however basic, to help protect you from this kind of blatant exploitation. I only hope that someone 'in the know' visits this thread and offers up some useful/helpful advice.

Zig, I can offer you a writing position that pays [b:2k458t8d]much[/b:2k458t8d] less than what you currently make! How are you with Exchange? My, we'll just say a VERY close relative, works in a law office and they are having some serious email issues. Of course the only thing their "IT" guy knows about exchange is how to spell it. They won't let me in to look and they won't look elsewhere because the owner "trusts" this guy. I get riled every time I think about it!

I can see instances where an employer should ask for pay cuts and employees should accept the cuts. GM, here in the US, is a prime example at the moment. Of course management should take some serious cuts themselves.
But! If the larger company had the money to buy your company they should have enough to pay the employees! Who the heck thought that through?

Heh, I figured it out. Since I'm salary and it doesn't matter how many hours I work, I get paid the same regardless, I figure I'll work 10 percent less every day.
I know lots about Exchange. It starts with an E, ends with an E, and is made by microsoft so there is lots of google help to be had if you know how and where to look.
Theoretically, upper management is affected by this paycut as well. But of course, it's not like they'll show us their paychecks to prove it, eh?
As for the writing gig....I'll try, I promise (and not just for the money, as tempting as you made that sound).
I have an Undelete thing to get to you too. I'll do that in my extra 50 minutes I have today.

I am not a lawyer but I raised one and I used to work with an Employment lawyer and I can tell you that depending upon the language in the contract you signed, it just may very well be illegal but you would have to have a lawyer read the contract for you...something to look into I would say.
