I'm back, well sort of. I moved this weekend, and am still trying to find things in my new house. Finally found a bath towel yesterday which was a welcome relief.

Still don't have the TV hooked up, which may be a good thing, I haven't decided yet.

But, no internet until Saturday. The FiOS people can't get out until Saturday, so I have a week of internet-less house.

I'm going to go nuts.

But on the plus side, I still have internet at work. My wife...she has to suffer.

Maybe I'll hack one of the local Wi-Fi networks...

Trust me, Zig. We are ALL glad you found a bath towel. To be honest, the smell was getting a little overpowering.

Saturday for net access? Say it isn't so! Well you lucky little devil at least you can have FIOS! I'm SO jealous!

Jim,

FIOS is Verizon's version of FTTP (Fiber to the Premises) or FTTH (Fiber to the Home). It's basically a direct fiber optic drop to your home. It's is a magical experience offering extremely high internet speed, television, telephone, and pixie dust.

Just imagine...
50Mbps down/20Mbps up internet speeds
Hundreds and hundreds of TV channels
Dozens and dozens of HD TV channels.

Makes me drool just thinking about it!

Whoa! makes me drool just [i:fzbxhsmr]hearing [/i:fzbxhsmr]about it. I am a complete electronics nut, got a big screen TV, pay TV, DVD/hard drive recorder, Kenwood surround sound system....all the gadgets. As far as I know, we have nothing like that in Oz...not even close......I'm emigrating!!

Oh, and thanks for the reply Dave,
cheers now....JIM

I'm feeling you Jim. If it runs on batterys or plugs into a wall I want one! I've got a pretty cool home theater (if that's what you want to call it ) setup. Love me some HD.

Now that I think about it... All I have to do is run a line from Zig's house to mine! Wonder what a couple hundred miles of that stuff will set me back?

Since Zig doesn't have internet access now would be a good time for the board to talk about him! Just Kidding!

Sure, talk it up. Cuz this Saturday I'll be zipping around the internet at speeds unheard of in the Internet World (well, at least in my house).

Dave, I don't think we need to run the Fibre straight down the road, we can just use a series of site-to-site transmitters and leapfrog a light speed link down I-69.

Sure, people may complain, but we'll branch it off to them as well.

That's gotta be pretty fast still, right? Right?

Well, I'm installing Uverse - ATT&T's IP based TV and Internet thingy - to see how it fairs against my Comcast cable. It uses fiber to the local node, then twisted copper to the premises. I can go up to 10Mbps, but I'm only forking over $$ for 6Mb, which is equivalent to Comcast.

You dang FIOS people tick me off! I'm dropping my beer offer and demanding YOU buy the beer!

Hmmm. Radio link. Hmmm. Charge others for access. Hmmmm. I don't know - I can get this - [url:3vxhgit2]http://www.fibernetworktools.com/catalog2.php?Category=Cables%20and%20Assemblies&SubCat=Optical%20Cable:%20Tactical&StudentNo=[/url:3vxhgit2] for ONLY $3696 per mile.

It's not my fault Verizon is giving me FiOS.

Of course, up until recently I was denied the goodness that is FiOS as well. They ran it all the way up to my neighborhood....and stopped.

It was very depressing.

On the plus side, now I get FiOS.

As for the Fibre cable...i'm game if you are, but the land rights for the link down to you might be a factor. ~shrug~

It's your call.

Hey Guys - Prompted by this discussion I had a bo peep around the net in an attempt to discover where we are at in the fibre optics + broadband department....the results were very sad.
The Government has recently called for tenders to supply a nationwide service (to reach 98% of the population)....I can only assume that means we are still light years away.
Mind you, OZ does have some problematical demographics to consider, such a large country with such a comparatively small and scattered population. In the outback, some people travel 200 miles or so just to visit their neighbours. The Govt. has specified 98% coverage and suggested $10bn as the bottom line, many disagree.
This from Bevan Slattery, CEO of Pipe Networks:

[i:348u12ey]Slattery said for the last eight per cent of people, telcos would need to cover 40 per cent of the land mass of Australia
