No Man’s Sky wows E3!
A small seven person indie developer, Hello Games, working out of a shed in Guildford, just south of London, wowed the audience at E3 with a trailer of their space adventure game, No Man’s Sky.
According to the devs, the game is unique in that it uses a technique where everything in the game is infinitely and procedurally generated by the game engine; which is to say, as far as I can make out, as you adventure into the unknown, each object you come into contact with is uniquely born and seen for the first time by you, the explorer.
To put that into perspective, a hi tech car in an AAA car racing game, could take months to put together, within a team of several hundred people.
It’s hardly any wonder why industry chiefs are asking themselves “Wow! Why didn’t we think of that stuff?”
Take a peak, it’ll knock your socks off!

Topic of the show?
This is a curious one.
In Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft decided NOT to include a female protagonist and suddenly everyone’s up in arms, telling the developers that with an extra couple of days, they could have pulled it off.
Ubisoft’s reply was that it would have taken about another 8,000 animations and that female characters have a very different physique to their male counterparts, in addition to the fact that they move, jump and walk like women, which is subtly different to blokes. Fair point.
Of course, the whole issue then opened up the question of female characters in games, with many asking why there were so few, which then leads on to white males, Asian males, female Asians, white females, trailer trash et al…you get the drift.
The truth is probably somewhere in between and it’s true that modelling female characters can be very subjective and it’s difficult to please everyone.
Many male gamers want bouncing body parts and of course, the lady gamers don’t give a fig as long as she’s a girl.
Does it matter?
