Daves Computer Tips is offering our subscribers the chance to win a copy of Windows 8.1 64-bit, including installation media and genuine product key, absolutely free!

Bearing in mind that XP’s end of support date is just around the corner, and many XP users will be looking to upgrade their operating system, we thought this might be a timely and useful prize.

DCT is pretty much the ‘home’ of Windows 8/8.1. Dave, myself, and Richard are all running Windows 8.1 and we all like the new operating system. Between us, we have written and published numerous articles, all drawn from first hand experience – guides, tips, how-tos, and the like – to help users setup and manage their new operating system.

It’s a terrific resource for anyone upgrading to Windows 8 or 8.1 and you can access all those articles in the one place by utilizing the ‘Post Categories’ feature in the right hand navigation panel. Just click on the ‘Windows 8’ item to view a list of links to all relevant titles:

For your chance to win the Windows 8.1 64-bit disc and genuine product key, all you need do is simply submit a reply to this article with a comment. We’d prefer if you told us a little about yourself and why you would like a copy of Windows 8.1.

*Now, DCT has never limited its giveaways to Facebook and/or Twitter account holders, our policy has always been “open to everyone”, and we are not changing that now. However, it would be very much appreciated if all Facebook and Twitter account holders who enter the contest could Share, or Like, or Tweet, or whatever you can do to help spread the word. Thanks!

  • Competition closes 14th April
  • If your comment does not appear immediately it’s because first comments must be moderated, it will appear shorty!
  • A postal address will be required to deliver this prize – by entering this contest you are explicitly agreeing to provide a postal address if your name comes out as the winner. If you do not wish to provide a genuine postal address, please do not enter.

Competition Rules:

  • To enter: post one reply to this article commenting on why you would like a copy of Windows 8.1.
  • The contest ends on 14th April at 00:01 (EST), any entries made after that time will not be eligible.
  • Your comment MUST be made from a VALID email address – disposable email addresses will not be eligible.
  • Each user is allowed only one entry. In the spirit of fairness, abusers of this rule may have all entries removed, be banned from this contest, or banned from future contests.
  • Shorty after the contest ends the winner will be chosen by random number generator.
  • The winner’s name will be announced on the original giveaway page.
  • The winner will be notified by email at the email address they provided when leaving their comment – be sure to use a valid email that you check regularly.
  • The winner must claim their prize by submitting a contact form which will be available (on this page) once the draw has been completed and winning name published.
  • The winner must claim their license within 7 days. After the seven (7) day period, unclaimed prizes will be distributed at the sole discretion of DCT.

We think you’ll agree, this is one special prize… best of luck to all entrants!

  1. I would love to win and give Window 8.1 to my Sister and Brother In law because they have helped me so much.

  2. I have been using windows 8.1 pro on all my laptops. It’s a good stable OS. With the Windows 8.1 update 1 it’s getting better for desktops and non touch laptops. Need one more licence key for my desktop as it’s the last pc running Windows 7 in my house. All my laptops/tablets are running Win 8.1 Pro.

  3. -because.. i still use a 50lb CRT, and would like the ability to add a touch screen..

Hi, I currently have Windows 7 but have heard that Windows 8.1 is way more Awesome. My friend installed the Windows 7 for me with his retail version so I don’t have a disc for it. Would LOVE to WIN the Windows 8.1 for my system upgrade so I’ll have the disc in case I need to reinstall.

  5. I would love to have a copy of Win8.1. I’m running 8.0 on my new laptop, and I sorely miss the Start Menu. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.

Dave, You can get Windows 8.1 as a Windows update for free. Just do manual Windows Update. It might be listed under optional.
      Hope this helps

  6. I would like to have a copy of Win 8.1 because…. I started out with a Tandy 1000 and MS-DOS 2.1, with one floppy drive. I learned DOS pretty well and was very reluctant to move to Windows. I think it was up to 3.0 or pretty close before I finally did. Since then I have upgraded through all the versions to the current v7. I’m 74 now and still helping friends and family with their problems. Before I retired I was always helping my workmates as well. As friends are now buying new computers that come with v8/8.1 and I don’t have a computer with v8.1 I’m kind of at a disadvantage when they want help. My first call for help was when a friend with v8.0 got suckered into the, “Hi, I’m from Microsoft Support” phone call. Luckily I had just read the warnings on that and told them to hangup! I had to do some cleanup, but it would sure help if I had v 8.1 to learn on so I be of much more value to help out. I have a desktop and a laptop to choose from to put it on.

Thanks for the great tips, and here’s hoping…..

  7. Fanstastic Giveaway.
I would love to have genuine CD with 8.1 and instal it on my new disk.
    Thanks!

  8. I currently have an HP laptop running Win XP Pro. It would be able to run Windows 8.1. If I win I could extend the life of my laptop without worrying about the end-of-life of XP and save some money.
    Thanks for the give away.

  9. I do have a newer laptop in search of an operating system. Someone didn’t like x64 Vista and ‘tried’ to install x86 XP. This would definitely come in handy. Thanks for the chance!
    Good luck to all!

  10. Rick Mattingly

I have been hesitating to move to Windows 8 but not if it is free!

  11. Hi Dave, Thanks again for another great giveaway!! I’m still a fan of WinXP and using it even as it is being phased out. With no more support it will be harder to stay secure online. Thus, I would love to win 8.1 in order to reduce my risk of acquiring an infection. Cheers.

  12. Lawrence Aubin

I’m a Vietnam vet and retired from the MA Army National Guard. Would love to win the full version of Windows 8.1 as I only have upgrade copies and they’re limited in installation choices.

  13. I am going to buy laptop without OS and install new Windows on it.
Thanks for the chance to win superb software!

  14. Thank you for this great giveaway. I’m currently a user of Windows Vista and I have tried the Win8 Preview . While I’m willing to switch over. Lost My win 7 laptop, Hate Vista, would love to have Win 8.1

  15. I bought a copy of Win8, and I haven’t yet had the nerve or the time to install it in my Win7 machine, but I am looking forward to having it if I can resolve all of the issues with drivers and resources that exist. It is pointless in my opinion to stick with an OS that is as old as XP is since there are so many malodorous folks out there that are just waiting to pounce. I would love to be able to go to 8.1 instead of 8 then 8.1, since it is the latest iteration of the OS, and although there are a lot of folks that are complaining about Win8, I kind of like it, and I also think that it is always interesting to learn new “stuff”…

  16. Many thanks for the offer, a great idea.
I am a user of XP and the deadline is practically around the corner.
I never buy new computers, a very bad investment.
It is also a cahallenge to manage running old computers and adding usable components from other dead computers.
I am waiting eagely for the results.

  17. Hi Jim
I am currently under education as an IT-support. On my job, we are currently deploying windows XP and 7. More and more students have laptops with windows 8, so it would be a really good help to have windows 8 by my own. Thank you for having this great DCT giveaway.
    Best Regards
    Peter

  18. Wulfing von Schleinitz

Our desktop is running Vista and could definitely use something more interesting. Am running Windows 7 on a laptop and have always found that a better operating system than Vista.

  19. My biggest beef with Windows 8 was with the tiles. I wasted a lot of time before reading tips on reorganizing the layout. I still prefer the old start menu though, maybe I’m old fashioned.

  20. Kaushik Medhi
