ChatGPT: Revolutionary AI To Replace Search Engines?

If you’re one to scour tech sites, you will undoubtedly have come across many recent articles discussing the rapid advancements in AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the impact of ChatGPT in particular.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI’s family of large language models and has been fine-tuned (an approach to transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques ~ Wikipedia

In short, the AI-powered ChatGPT, is simply amazing in its scope, so much so that many industry pundits are predicting that this type of AI will eventually replace search engines as the primary source of information. Microsoft has already launched a new AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge Browser:

Today, we’re launching an all new, AI-powered Bing search engine and Edge browser, available in preview now at Bing.com to deliver better search, more complete answers, a new chat experience and the ability to generate content. We think of these tools as an AI copilot for the web. AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all, search ~ source Microsoft Blog

And Google is so concerned over the emergence of ChatGPT and advanced AI that the company is already developing its own AI-powered chatbot called “Bard” to rival ChatGPT.

Paul Buchheit, the creator of Gmail, recently Tweeted on the potential demise of Google search:

Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption. AI will eliminate the Search Engine Result Page, which is where they make most of their money. Even if they catch up on AI, they can’t fully deploy it without destroying the most valuable part of their business ~ source

Opera has also recently announced the upcoming integration of AI-generated content (AIGC) services into its PC and mobile browsers. Yes, folks, the impact of ChatGPT and AI-powered services has obviously been both swift and comprehensive.

ChatGPT In Action

We have already published an article from our own Stu Berg explaining how you can try out ChatGPT: ChatGPT: Give AI (Artificial Intelligence) A Try. In this article, I’m going to show you an example of ChatGPT at work.

As well as answering any questions you might have, ChatGPT has the ability to compile code, create batch files, write articles, and much, much more. In fact, it would be far simpler to list what ChatGPT cannot do rather than what it is capable of. Some tech sites are already employing ChatGPT to write their articles which are so human-like that I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference between AI-generated articles and those written by humans.

Under is a short video of ChatGPT in action. I asked ChatGPT to create a 200-word article explaining the difference between hard disk drives and solid-state drives. Note how quickly and expertly the article is created and how the language used is so human-like:

BOTTOM LINE:

Programmers are using ChatGPT to help with compiling code, tech sites are using ChatGPT to create articles, and online giants Microsoft and Google are incorporating AI and AI-powered chatbots into their services. As far as I am concerned, this is possibly the most exciting and revolutionary advancement in technology for quite some time.

REMINDER: If you’re interested in checking out ChatGPT and its capabilities, refer to Stu Berg’s earlier article: ChatGPT: Give AI (Artificial Intelligence A Try which explains in detail how to sign up for and start using ChatGPT.

  1. Whilst the AI might be amazing in many ways it is extremely disappointing that it has clearly been programmed from a Leftist political viewpoint once you start asking certain political questions.
For example, ask it to write a poem praising President Trump and it will refuse stating it is outside of it’s remit to do so. However ask it to do exactly the same with President Biden and it can’t oblige quickly enough !

Just like the supposedly “impartial” ABC and BBC, don’t rely on ChatGPT to give you an impartial result on all political matters. And if you can’t trust it in that space then what other biases may it have ?

“Open the Outer Bay doors Hal.” Well it might – just as long as it agrees with your politics !!!

    1. Hey Reg,

I’m surprised ChatGPT responded to any politically motivated questions at all, it’s not supposed to.

Sex, religion, and politics, the three proverbial no-nos.

    1. Hey Charles,

This is no great surprise as this type of AI is an emerging technology with a lot of refinements and enhancements still required.

I think the important thing to keep in mind here is that the user can always easily and quickly terminate any chat. I have an upcoming (follow up) article in the pipeline which touches on all this.
