Bad Apple – iOS Update and Bending iPhones Woes

After having a blockbuster launch weekend by selling over 10 million iPhones, Apple is having a rough week.

Apple released an iOS update (iOS 8.0.1) that proved to be pretty deadly to their newest models, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.   After numerous reports of these models having no cellular capabilities and nonfunctioning Touch IDs after updating to iOS 8.0.1, Apple promptly pulled the update.  Apple also published instructions on how to reinstall iOS 8 on your device if you are one of the poor souls who installed iOS 8.0.1.  iOS 8.0.2 was expected in a few days but was just released this evening (September 25th).  In addition to addressing the cellular connectivity and Touch ID issues, the update also fixes the following issues:

  • HealthKit apps were not made available on the App Store
  • Entering your passcode could cause a 3rd-party keyboard to become deselected
  • Some apps couldn’t access the Photo Library
  • There could be unexpected cellular data usage when receiving SMS/MMS messages.
  • Ringtones were sometimes not restored from iCloud backups
  • Photos and videos could not be uploaded from Safari

The update also improves the reliability of the Reachability features on iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus and provides better support of Ask to Buy for Family Sharing for In-App purchases.

If Apple didn’t get enough grief over iOS 8.0.1, it’s also weathering allegations that iPhone 6 Plus bends way too easily, known as “bendgate”.  Apple told The Wall Street Journal that only nine customers have complained to Apple that their iPhone 6 Plus had bent. Apple said that warping of its new, larger phone is “extremely rare.” Meanwhile, social media is rife with claims of bending iPhones with YouTube videos in abundance.

  1. Of course it bends, particularly when under stress in someones back pocket when they sit.
The meanest intelligence could have anticipated this, so what are Mac designers doing dreaming up new laws of Physics & engineering?
