6 Free Portable Retro Games

These are all small, lightweight, portable games based on classic oldies. All have been tested and worked fine in Windows 8.1.

Free Retro Game #1 – Shootapede

This is a simple remake of the classic Atari game Centipede. Shootapede has all the familiar foes vying to take you out and is easily controlled via mouse. Provides a fun bit of nostalgic gameplay.

Shoot the Centipedes as they descend the garden. Watch out for Spiders, Scorpions and Fleas as the action gets hectic.

Free Retro Game #2 – Donkey Kong Craze

A solid and lightweight remake of the 1981 platformer, Donkey Kong was one of the most popular games in its day.

Choose between a classic Donkey Kong remake, with all the original levels or Donkey Kong Kong 2.

Free Retro Game #3 – Missile Command

A full featured remake of the original classic ATARI Missile Command game with enhanced 3D look, colors and sounds.

Based on the ATARI classic arcade game “MISSILE COMMAND”. This version has been improved by putting the whole game in a 3D scenario.

*NOTE: As this game was written pre Windows 7, a DLL may be missing from Windows. The Major Geeks download already includes the additional DLL so is good to go. The DLL is listed as a separate download on the developer’s page, just download the DLL and extract it to the same folder as the game.

Free Retro Game #4 – Galaxian

Another excellent remake from Minionsoft, this time of the classic Midway game, Galaxian. Follows the original game faithfully, including gameplay, levels,  graphics, and original baddies.

Based on the MIDWAY classic arcade game “GALAXIAN”. This version sees all the original baddies and levels and gameplay.

Free Retro Game #5 – Mega Mario

Mega Mario is a Super Mario Bros. 1 clone. It features everything the original features – with better graphics, higher resolution, smoother movement and new levels.

In the game you play Mario and your task is to free his brother Luigi, who was captured by evil Bowser. Create your own levels after completing the game with the Level-Editor

  • Requirements: None listed – can be controlled via keyboard or gamepad
  • Download: Full version (26 MB zip – includes high quality music) or small version (6 MB zip – MIDI music only) Direct from Developer
  • Portable: Yes

Free Retro Game #6 – XM Solitaire

Not so much retro as classic, this collection includes 200 card games for Windows including Freecell, Klondike, Fan, Spider, Pyramid, Gaps and more.

    1. Yes Kevin, they’ll all work in Windows 7.

      We tested specifically in Windows 8 because these are all pretty old games and we wanted to make sure they worked okay in the new OS,
